Session Title:
Position-Specific Finishing and Crossing Combinations
(Aligned with Individual Development Plans – IDP Focus)
Target Positions (IDP Profiles):
Central Midfielder
Full-Back / Wide Defender
Winger
Striker (Central and Wide Roles)
Session Objective:
To develop player-specific technical and tactical actions in final third scenarios, focusing on:
Cut-back and early crossing delivery
Body shape and technique for finishing
Timing of movement (particularly late box entries and support play)
Position-specific decision-making in 2v1 and unbalanced attacking situations
Coaching Points by Player (IDP Focus):
Attacker (CF/Wide Forward):
Cut-back finishes: timing arrival into space, body shape for one-touch execution
Dribbling to commit and unbalance defender
Combination play: set and through pass execution
Wide Defender / Winger:
Body shape to receive (side-on, positive first touch)
Early cross detail: plant foot beside ball, lean over, delivery accuracy
Height and weight of cross adapted to target and space
Central Midfielder / Attacking Support:
Support positioning to receive under pressure
Ability to combine through central zones or arrive late into the box
Decision-making in final pass or switch of play
Session Design & Structure:
Block 1 & 2 – Technical Finishing & Crossing Combinations (Unopposed to Semi-Opposed):
Phase 1:
Coach feeds goalkeeper → GK plays into central striker
Striker takes a positive first touch across body and shoots
Repeated both sides for symmetry and exposure
Phase 2:
Following the shot, the opposite goalkeeper throws wide
Wide player (winger/full-back) delivers an early cross into the space
Inside the box: 2v1 situation (2 attackers vs 1 recovering defender)
Action is mirrored into the opposite box for repetition and varied delivery angles
Block 3 & 4 – Combination Play & Opposed 2v1 Execution:
Phase 1:
GK plays into striker → striker combines with CM or wide player in a 1-2
Striker receives behind and finishes
Phase 2:
GK immediately throws wide → winger drives inside to create 2v1
2v1 scenario: one striker and winger vs one defender
Repeated in the opposite box to ensure rotational opportunities
Intervention Strategies:
Concurrent Coaching: Live technical/tactical feedback during play
Individual Interventions: One-to-one technical correction or praise based on player IDP
Walkthroughs: Used to clarify movement timing, angles of support, and crossing/finishing zones
