Passing in numbers (15 mins)

Passing in Numbers

•Get the group into groups of 4 or 5 and have them number themselves off. #1 passes to #2, #2 to #3 and so on. They should be in a 10 x 10 grid.

•Coaching points are calling their number before the player before them receives the ball so that they know where each other are. Players should look around when they don’t have the ball to facilitate speed of the passes. No one should ever be standing.

•Progressions include demanding 1 touch passing, having them not talk in order to encourage more spatial awareness without the ball, checking their shoulder, fixing their shape, receiving on the half turn, using 2 touches as a mandatory and have their first touch come across their body away from pressure.

Everton Box Passing Drill (15 mins)

Everton Box Passing Drill (with dragging added in)

•Set up a 12x12 grid with 2 cones in the middle of the grid 2 yards apart.

•Have a line of people at each cone around the grid and 1 person on each of the 2 cones in the middle.

•2 balls at 2 opposite diagonal corners of the grid.

•2 players in the middle check away from the ball opposite them and check to the ball while switching sides. They receive a pass, check their shoulder, fix their shape, receive on the half turn. Player now drags inside to create space outside for their a pass to the next cone. The person receiving the pass does the same shoulder check and reception on the half turn and then works moves while dribbling to the next line. After the turn and pass the player moves to where he passed and the first passer also follows his pass and moves to the middle now.

•Progression has the pass to the middle being a man on call, instead of the turn call. Now the ball is passed back with a set call and then again we drag inside to create space outside for the pass up to the next line. Same change of line process goes on.

•Next progression has the player in the middle calling for an overlap after he makes the set pass and then receiving the ball back and then sending it up to the next cone.

•Lastly, after the overlap, don’t pass straight but instead pass to the opposite corner player (who checked away, checked to, checked shoulder, fixed shape, received on the half turn) and then he plays a give and go with the player opposite him to then continue the sequence on the other side. (only 2 balls are used in this progressed version of this drill.)

3 zone functional (30 mins)

3 zone functional

Divide the pitch into 3 zones.

Middle zone should have even number of players on each team

Defensive zone should have one more defender than attackers

Many versions to play

#1. Players can't leave their zone and play free

#2. When a player passes the ball into the next zone, they can now follow into the zone and join giving an overload in that zone. Once they lose possession they must go back to their original zone.

#3. Players may not pass to move out of their zone but instead must run with the ball to move into the next zone

#4. You can keep bringing in any kind of stipulation depending on what your functional goals may be.

Coaching points.

- Spacing

- Communication

- When in a zone that doesn't have the ball, don't crowd the lines but instead move to create space for yourself and your teamates (wing mids checking away and to, cm doing the same or pealing away to create space in the middle for the offside winger to make a run through the middle)
