1vs1 to get your body between the ball and the attacker. (15mins)
Organization:
Set up two 1v1 stations as per the image.
Instructions:
-1v1 Activity starts on attackers (Red) first touch
-defenders have to recover in the run and be able to steal the ball or block the shot
-if you steal the ball and score on their goal you get two points.
-red gets 1 point per goal
-every two minutes we switch.
Coaching Points:
- Be ready for attacker's first touch (on your toes)
- Use shoulder to fight for ball
- Try and get our body between the ball and the player
- Identify the right moment to tackle
- Don't allow shooting
- Be ready for fakes
- Quick counter attack when recover the ball
- Cut the angle off between the attacker and the goal. (run to goal)
Progressions:
Give a couple of yards of advantage to the attacker. if attacker is scoring too easy, you can adjust the distance.

Method: 3v2 (15mins)
Player A - Plays the ball to the CM. Then steps to defend with two defenders (R defender and L defender)
Coaching Points:
- 1st defender (nearest to the ball) pressure, 2nd defender cover the inside shoulder of the 1st defender
- pressuring fast enough and covering (shifting) fast enough.

Method: Defenders defending in their own half within a 8 vs 6 game. (25mins)
- Shape 1-4-2-1 v 2-3-1 plus 1 server.
- Start by the blue server by passing to either No 6 or 8.
- Blues score on the big goal.
- When reds win the ball, they score on two mini goals on the halfway line. (If it's too easy, encourage them to dribble through)
Coaching Points:
- Who is the first defender.
- Pressure and cover.
- Force attacker away from the goal
- Challenge with confidence
- Transition

Organization :
Set up a 30x40 field
8 cones spread around randomly
2 teams of 4/5 players each
1 ball per pair of players
Instructions:
Divide the players in pairs, attackers dribble around trying to stop the ball on the disc for a point. Defenders have to stay with the attacker and step on the disc before the attacker can get the ball there. Rotate defenders with attackers every 2 minutes.
No tackling, players are only competing vs their partner.
Coaching Points:
- Pressure fast,
- Angle of body
- how can we force players to dribble to the spaces with no discs?
- Body Shape on approach (Low, Knees bent)
- Try not to use toe pokes
- Be patient and identify the right moment to tackle
Progressions:
Allow defenders to steal the ball, they become attackers when they get the ball and the roles reverse.
