What this session is about
1.Defending 1v1.
2.Defending with a team mate in a 2v1 and 2v2.
3.Reacting to different defending situations.
What to think about:
In a game there are situations where players are required to defend alone and situations where they are required to defend in groups. These different situations require different techniques to be successful.
Therefore, training in isolation is important but training in a random practice like this better reflects the changing situations that will occur in a real game.
Set-up
25 yards x 20 yards area.
What to call out:
“Pressure quickly and at match speed”
“Get into a support or covering position”
“Give your mate some information (communicate)”
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Now the defenders must react to the next attack and go back to their own channel to defend a 1v1 situation where they will have to work independent of their team mate to win the ball.
The defenders must now react and defend alone in two 1v1 situations.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Now the defenders must react to a 3rd ball where two attackers enter the pitch to attack in a 2v2 situation.
This is the hardest test as while one defender goes to pressure the other supports. Now a run off the ball from the attacker not in possession can cause confusion between the two defenders. Therefore, communication is vital.
When competent at this practice your players are ready to play a normal game and defend a range of match situations effectively.
Finally the defenders react and work together for a 2nd time. This time in a 2v2 situation.

The Session (20 mins)
What you get your players to do
Two defenders work together to defend 2v1 against an attacker who can score in either of the target goals.
In this situation one defender must go to apply pressure on the attacker with the other defender taking up a supporting position.
The defenders try to stop the attacker in a 2v1 situation.
