The Four Core Skills Key Objectives


First Touch

  • Receive the ball in space “see the ball see the target”
  • Make a touch with the inside foot
  • First touch away from a defender
Striking the Ball
  • Laces when striking the ball for goal
  • Follow through the ball and land on striking foot
  • Point your supporting foot and hips indirection of target
  • Follow through with leg no higher than the knee
  • Use inside of foot to pass the ball
1v1 Defending
  • Angle of approach (body angle to force away from goal)
  • Timing of the tackle, don’t dive in.
  • Speed to stop defender before they score.

1v1 Attacking

  • Change of speed, change of direction, skill moves
  • Timing of changes and timing of the finish
  • Don’t force it into pressure, turn and go the other way.
Running with Ball
  • Keep the ball on the furthest foot from your defender (safe foot) when running with the ball
  • The receiving player to identify where the space is to run with the ball and how much space there is to run with the ball
  • Appropriate and positive touch out of the feet and into the space available – lots of space – big touch – confined space, smaller touch
  • Quick movement to get to the ball quickly
  • Head up, to decide next action
  • Use the laces – front of the foot to run with the ball, keeping the head up and the ball in front
  • Understanding of how far to knock the ball with the laces – lots of space, bigger touches, run quickly. Smaller space, smaller touches, be more under control
  • Decision to run away from defenders or to cut across defenders
  • Keep the head up when running with the ball with the ball to make correct decisions – change direction slow down, speed up, pass, shoot cross etc.
  • Good technique and execution of the next action – pass, shot, cross etc

First Touch - Move, Touch & Pass (10 mins)

Rules/Explanation

  • Setup 2 fields up in a 15m x 5m area - Relay between 2 teams
  • Poles set up approx. 4 steps a part
  • Startwith ball at the cone
  • P2 & P3 start in front of the poles (defender) until ball is touched by the player
  • P1 makes a small touch and dribbles outside poles.
  • P2 checks off the pole outside and behind the defender
  • P2 receives the ball with his furthest foot and passes the ball to P3
  • P3 checks off the poles outside and behind the defender to receive the ball moving forward.
  • P3 makes a short run with th ball and pass to the start of line to progress
  • Players follow their pass

Striking the Ball - At Goal (10 mins)

Rules/Explanation

  • Setthe field up in a 30m x 30m area
  • P1 starts with the ball trying to score against the goalkeeper.
  • Onceshot taken P2 attacks the adjacent goal and P1 becomesdefender
  • P2 beats has a shot at goal against goalkeeper
  • Playerskeep alternating from attack into defence and trying to score a goal
  • Playersgo to opposite lines
  • Encourageleft and right touch and shooting

1v1 - Gates (10 mins)

Rules/Explanation

  • Setthe field up in a 20m x 20m area
  • P1 decides which gate to go through first and dribbles the ball through
  • P2 sprints to the opposite gate as P1 and then looks to defend 1v1 
  • P1 has to beat P2 1v1 to score a goal
  • Continuewith the same team attacking and defending, once each player has had a go swapover.

RWB - Dribbling to Score (10 mins)

Rules/Explanation

  • Set the field up in a 20m x 30m area
  • 2 teams to form a relay game
  • Set out cones to navigate and dribble through
  • Place a pole at the exit point for the players to dribble around before going to goal
  • Next player begins RWB once the ball has been shot (or missed)
  • Team that completes the relay the fastest and with most goals WINS
  • Players must use furthest (safe) foot when dribbling through the course (change feet)
