Technical Practice15 mins

Organisation -Technical Practice - Passing and Moving

Area - 30x30 box, 4 coned out zones 10 yards long and 5 yards wide.

Players - 12 (split into 4 groups of three players)

Description - the group will be split into four groups of three players in each of the coned out zones.

Onces they are in the zones the players at the bottom will start with the ball being player 1, they will make a pass to player two who will then pass the ball back, then player 2 will open their legs for player 1 to then pass the ball through to player three. Player 1 will then go into the middle switching places with player 2 and player 2 will go to where player 1 was.

Once player 1 is in the middle then player three will pass them the ball, then player 1 passes back to player 3, opens their legs ready for the ball to be passed through them. Once player 3 passes the ball through player 1s legs they then come into the middle and player 1 goes where player 3 was.

Limitations:

  • limit the the touches to 1-2 touches if they can do it first time.
  • can they use their weak foot making that pass.
Coaching Points:
  • when receiving the pass can they use their front foot and back foot.
  • think about the weight on the pass as its going through a players legs.
  • when switching over can you do it quick.

Directional Possession10 mins

Organisation - Directional/Multi Directional Possession

Area - 1 box - 30x30/20x20.

Players - 12

Description - the players will be split into two even teams of six players each. Once they have been put into their teams and given their bibs the players will set up with two players on the blue team on the outside and two players from the red team on the outside of the box.

The practice will begin with either the blue player on the red player on the outside passing the ball into on of their team mates. The blue player passes the ball in to one of their team mates, once they receive the ball they will then look to go from the top player then by passing the ball around with their team mates to ensure they can get the ball to the blue player at the bottom. The image shows the ball begins with the blue at the top of the area, they then pass the ball to player 1, once player 1 has received the ball they should be looking to then pass the ball into the player 2, the from player to receiving the ball they look to pass the ball into player 3 who would then look to play the ball into the player on the outside at the bottom, once they do this then they would gain 1 point.

The team out of possession of the ball should be trying to gain possession of the ball to then ensure they can get points back they have possibly lost, in the scenario on the image the blues are in possession, this means the reds are looking to cut out the passing lanes, getting tight to their player they are marking and as well as this ensuring they are communicating with each other. The reason they would need to get tight to the player in blue is to put them under pressure and force a mistake from them and then this could gain the reds possession of the ball. As well as getting tight if they can cut the passing lanes off then this is a quick turn over in possession where they can get the ball look to pass the ball to a team mate and get the ball into the player on the outside, mirroring a counter attack for them. Communication is key for both set of teams, communication for the defending ensures they are talking on how they are pressing the players getting tight to them are they going to go alone or they going as a pair, if they are communicating when they are saying over your shoulder they as a team are ensuring they are letting the team know if they have a player in space on if there is a player spare who needs marking.

Limitations:

  • if the players are finding it to easy to get the ball into their outside players adding 1-2 touches on the ball to make sure they are having to think about their touches.
  • they have to make 4 passes before they can pass the ball into the outside players.
  • they can not play the ball over the top the ball has to stay on the ground.

Progression:
  • making the area smaller will enhance the players ability to work in a tight area, think about their touches on the ball and their time on the ball.
Coaching Points - In Possession:

  • Communication
  • checking your shoulder.
  • how you want to control the ball (front foot/back foot)
  • movement off the ball.

Coaching Points - Out of Possession:

  • tight to the players forcing a mistake.
  • cutting the passing lanes
  • communication

Rotate players on the outside every two points.

Multi Directional Possession10 mins

Organisation - Directional/Multi Directional Possession

Area - 1 box - 30x30/20x20.

Players - 12

Description - the teams wont change they will stay the same, the difference from the previous practice is that the players on the outside were joined to either the red team or the blue, now they are on either of the teams, meaning the team in possession will look to go to any of the yellow players now to score a point.

The teams will do the same process, looking to pass the ball ball and hold possession getting the ball into one of the yellow players to score a point. The main difference is that they now have two other way they can score a point, resulting in possession changing direction constantly, they might go to the player on the left side of of area first and then go to the top player, this then ensure they are using the multi directional possession as they are moving possession from the top to the bottom then to the right side of the area.

Small Sided Game20 mins

Organisation - Small Side Game

Area - 50x50 pitch size, 8 cones to show the area, 2 goals.

Players - 12

Description - the teams will be the same from the practice prior. The first 5 minutes of the SSG will be free play with no restrictions on play to see how they take the practice of directional and multi directional possession in to a game situation.

After the first 5 minutes of free play the first restriction on play will come in. The first restriction on the game will be the players must hold possession for 10 seconds being counted out by the players then they can score, if they hold the ball for the 10 seconds they can gain 1 point on top scoring 1 goal if they are successful in scoring a goal.

The second restriction on play will be they can not score until every player on their team has had possession on the ball, meaning every players has to touch the ball at least once before they can score.

The last 5 minutes of the SSG are again free play and they can play a normal game.

Coaching Points:

  • encourage confidence to keep the ball and not force the ball forward.
  • communication from the players to ensure they are able to support their team mates.
  • control on the ball
  • weight of the passes if they are far away.
  • controlling the ball with their front or back foot.
