The focus of this session is breaking opposition lines. I want to have an emphisis on the younger ages having creativity and the intelligence to be able to split a line of defence with a single pass.
Learning Objectives:
- Break lines by correct weight of pass
- Break lines with correct ball speed
I have decided to use the Under 9s as the age I would like to work with. There is going to be a total of 18 players all with a difficult level of ability.
I will aim to have a ball rolling time of around 85-90% in order for my players to get plenty of touches and not be stood around.
Bullseying - I will choose the last three players to arrive at my session to bullseye. I will want them to do a first time/disguised pass to break an opposition line.

Technical Small area = More Touches which will help improve technical |
|
Physical Low rest periods to keep players working through fatigue |
|
Psychological Competition so incentive to move up the pitch |
|
Social more problem solving situations as well as the need to count how many times youve been in the middle |
Main Body One - Rondo League (Variable Practice) - Green cones
Equipment:
- Green Cones
- Ball Nest
- 6 Bibs
Steps:
1. Players will play a 4-man rondo with two players in the middle
2. When a player wins the ball they swap with the player that looses the ball.
3. The two players with the most times in the middle will move down. The 2 players with the least will move up the leagues.
The session will be done in 4 blocks of 2 minutes with a 30 second rest and swap period in between each session (Physical).
By doing 4v2, it still gies the players the opportunity to split the defenders.
Progressions:
- 1 Touch Passes
- 3 defenders v 3 attackers
- Getting split gives the defenders +3 to total score (Remember, the least points is the best) - This gives the players the incentive for the defenders to not get split and the attackers to try and split them.
Interventions:
There will be no interventions in this session other than to describe the progressions. By not doing this, it gives the players the opportunity to problem solve and make their own decisions.

Tactical Floater adds an overload for the players to try and defend |
|
Physical Lots of rest periods to help keep the standard high |
|
Psychological Point system to give players a target to reach and avoid losing |
|
Social Floater - Plays for whoevers attacking so gets used to communicating with everyone. Also see the progressions to see more of the social corner |
Main Body 2 - 3v2 +4 Bounce Players (Random Practice) - White Cones
Equipment:
- White Cones
- Ball Nest
- 4 Coloured Bibs
Steps:
1. The two teams in the middle play through the boxes and out to the bounce player to score a point.
2. The floater plays for the attacking team to help play with an overload.
This means that the players will still have the opportunity for the split and try to score points.
Scoring System:
1 Point = Pass to Bounce Player
2 Points = Pass to bounce pass with a split during that phase
3 Points = Direct pass to bounce player from the split
This session will be done in 3 blocks of 4 minutes with a rest inbetween each session. This rest period will give them the opportunity to swap the bounce players as well as the floater.
Progressions:
- 1 touch pass intobounce player for a point
- 1 touch to split the defenders
- Bounce can swap with on field players to help give rests. This will be done through communication which will improve the social corner of the 5 corner model.
Interventions:
Fly By: Punch through the lines and be firm with your passes
Fly By: Build up the play and then penetrate when the opportunity arrises

Technical Big area will approve a range of different passing techniques. |
|
Tactical Be Patient and penetrate when there is an opportunity |
|
Physical Big area gives the players more space to work in and more chance of fatigue |
|
Psychological Who can break the most lines in 5 minutes? |
|
Social 'Quarterback' style player to dictate play. |
Small Sided Game - Line Breaker (Random Practice) - Blue Cones
Equipment:
- Blue Cones
- Ball Nest
- 2 Coloured Bibs
- Goal Net
Scoring:
1 Point = Goal
3 Points = Goal after defence splitting pass
This will be a normal attack vs defence game with the play resuming with the attackers once the ball goes 'dead'.
It will be a 5v3 in favour of the defenders split over two grids. This way it will give the players more space which will mean more workload (Physical) but will also allow them more touches to hopefully identify an area which they can improve (For example, Penetrative Passes which corresponds to the technical corner. As well as this, it will get attackers used to playing in an underload situation and how to stay patient and build the attack (Tactical).
This session will be done in four block of four minutes with a one minute break to recover and discuss tactics between teams ahead of the next block.
Progressions:
- 5 v 3 in favour of attackers (harder to split defenders)
- 4 v 4 so that it is player for player which leads to needing more tactical and technical thinkiong/abilities
- 3 touch so that the players improve touch and pass
Regressions:
-If it is too difficult to split the defence when 5v3, then regress back to stop the standard dropping or the objectives not being met.
Interventions:
Coaching Process: Show an example of a line splitting run to help the players make these runs during the phases and help them determine themselves how to break lines.
