Pressure Rondo (30 mins)

4v4 high block pressure rondo.

Setup and Instruction:

  • 4 teams of 4 + 2 GK (totaling 18 players)
  • Only 2 teams play at a time, rotating after 3 points are scored.
  • Place a target player (goalkeeper) at both ends and play 4v4 in the middle. Start with a pass from a target man to a player who enters the end zone to collect it. Each team tries to move the ball from one end to the other, playing it to a runner in the end zone who scores by passing to the target.

    • Defenders should read passes and also communicate with their teammates to determine if they can press or if they need to hold.
  • Defenders will attempt to steal the ball or force a mistake and take advantage with a quick counterattack.
  • One point for making a pass to your target man from inside the shaded area.

Focus: Mimic an attacking high press against a team playing out from the back. Working together to determine an ideal time to press together. Try to press together on bad passes, sloppy first touches, or players taking too long on the ball.

Press vs. Playing From The Back (20 mins)

High block pressure vs. goal kick. Pressure triggered when GK commits to playing out of the back instead of kicking the ball long.

Setup and Instruction:

  • 4v4 with a goalkeeper on half of the pitch. 2 games going at a time (16 player + 2 goalkeepers) each using half of the pitch.
  • The drill starts from a goal kick by the red team.
  • Playing the ball short will trigger the blue team to put on a high press.
  • The red team will work together to try and pass the ball into one of the mini-goals just short of midfield.
  • The blue team will work together to apply pressure and try to force a bad touch or pass. Following a turnover, they will quickly counterattack and attempt to score on the full-sized goal.
Focus: triggering the high press as soon as the goalkeeper commits to playing out of the back. Blue team should pressure TOGETHER, so there needs to be good communication and understanding of when to apply pressure (ie, bad touch, bad pass, bad positioning on the field.)

8v8 (30 mins)

8v8 full field scrimmage with 2 goalkeepers (18 total players) with emphasis on pressing. Each half of the scrimmage and every throw-in will start with a goal kick instead.

Setup and instruction:

  • Full-field 8v8 with 2 goalkeepers.
  • 2x15-minute halves.
  • Goals scored during the run of play count as 1.
  • Goals scored off of a high press turnover (a turnover inside of the opponent's half) count as 2.
Focus: Determining when to press together. The trigger should be based on the opposition team playing out of the back. Communicate with each other and be aware of your teammate's positioning on the field. When pressing, try to cut out passing lanes.
