The team has been struggling to create chances. Many of the chances we get are when we play through balls and long balls and break the opponent's back line. Quite often we then run out of ideas and one player carries the ball until the defenders recover and dispossess them. The goal of this session is to introduce the ideas of diagonal runs and overlaps as alternatives to just running to the goal side-by-side with the teammate with the ball in order to confuse the defense and become more available.

Four cones at the corners of 15 yard x 30 yard grid with a flag in the center representing a defender. Players split up with equal numbers at each cone. Ball begins with Player A. A passes to Player B. Player B then dribbles hard at the defender(flag) in the center. Player A performs an overlap and calls for the pass, being careful to stay onside until Player B plays the return pass. The ball is then passed to the other end and the players on that end repeat the pattern. Halfway through the allotted time switch the side that the ball begins on. Emphasize using the diagonal run with the ball to draw defenders and a hard overlap to find the space the defenders have left.

Set up up forward and two wingers at midfield in game like positions. Also set up two flags at midfield on either side of the forward. Have 2 center backs set up five yards out from the flags. Keeper sets up in goal. Coach in the center of the field feeds the ball to one of the attackers. The attackers immediately attack. As soon as the defenders see the ball they run around the flag in from of them and then recovery defend. Attackers have 5 seconds to get a shot. Emphasize attackers moving the ball upfield quickly before defenders can recover. Discuss diagonal runs and over laps as alternatives to straight runs that are easily defensed. Emphasize creativity and new ideas to diversify attack.
