Set up one field about 50 x 30 and separate the kids into two teams. Each team sets up at one end of the field (off the field). At the end of each field is a goal (2 cones 7 feet apart). Also in the middle of the field is a gate about 10 feet wide. The coach stands outside the field in the mid section with the balls.
Each team will have a goal keeper to start. The coach kicks the ball to goalkeeper from Team A who scoops it up (using GK scooping tehnique) and rolls it (using a GK distribution roll technique) to attacker from Team B. The attacker dribbles the ball through the gate and tries to score a goal by kicking the ball in past the GK between the cones. Attacker scores - 1 point; GK saves - 2 points. No point if ball goes out.
Rotate GK and Attacker within each Team for each play. Afterwards, Team B players become GKs and Team A players become attackers. Every player should get a chance to be a GK.
Progression: The attacker has to dribble to the left of the gate to change point of attack. Next progession - the attacker goes to the right of the gate. Last progression - two attackers.
Coaching Points:
•Proper hand positioning for catching (ball shape with a window inside index fingers and thumbs), elbows slightly bent for slight cushion
•Proper scooping technique (attack the ball, lunging motion, arms close together and inside the lunging leg, back leg low)
•Secure the ball after scoop or catch
•Quality of rolling or throwing distribution

1. Why do we need goalkeepers?
2. How do goalkeepers prevent goals?
