Attacking Shape to penetrate vs 4-3-3

The purpose of the session is to understand the positional roles and attacking principles.

Main focus will be on the off ball movement to positioning to create space and runs to attack the space created.
Coaching points will include positioning, combination plays, 3rd man runs and the timing of runs off the ball.

Practice Objectives:

Passing practice to build combinations in central areas. 

Practice Explanation:

Play starts with a pass in to the supporting player (1) who receives on the half turn to play forwards (2). After playing forward they make a forward run (3) to receive a wall pass inside. The receiver plays through to the end player (4) who sets back (5) to the second receiver who plays a 1-2 (6) with the end receiver to start the pattern again in the opposite direction.

Set up:

  • Grid with mid zone
    • 8v5+2
  • Goals with GKs or End Zones (6yds)

Instructions:

  • Zonal Possession
    • Attacking (RED) - possession to penetrate into next zone and score on goal (3pt if 1 touch in zone). Must complete 3 passes before progressing. Enter Mid Zone w First Touch or Pass. Front 3 stay in opposite half, 1 can check into mid zone to receive and combine.
    • Defending (BLUE) - deny progression/penetration. In possession, (score in mini goals 3pt) or (dribble out as quick as possible 1pt). 3 defenders start on top half, 2 remain back and these can follow attacker when they check in mid zone. (Progression - one blue player from the front can recover to defend).
    • 4* (3'30R) - 15min

Set up:

  • 1 - Half Field (cut corners) with/without offside lines (7v7+1) 20+ players
  • 2 - 4 Mini Goals (5v5+1) 15+ players

Instructions:

  • #1 - Attacking Play 7v7+1
    • Attacking - Possession looking for the moment to penetrate and score on goal. Goal (1pt), score/assist from danger zones (2pts). If no GKs must penetrate box before scoring only 1 touch.
    • Defending - deny penetration/progression.
    • 6*2'30R Total 15mins

  • 2 - 5v5+1
    • In possession - move the ball to disorganize the opponent and find moment to penetrate. Score in mini goals 
    • Out of Possession - remain organized to deny penetration. Winning possession look to score quickly.
    • 6*2'30R Total 15mins
