Breaking Lines: OOP
This skill session is to encourage defending and prevent opponents from breaking lines.
Defenders to delay or intercept breaking lines when they are OOP of the ball, to prevent the movement of the ball up the pitch, to force the opposition IP to go around and force less accurate, longer range passes with more chance of interception and change over of the ball possession.
they will also have neutral players within the skill who will force an overload for the team in possession, making defending more challenging.
Organisation:
12 players will be organised into 3 teams of 4.
The yellow team will begin as the neutral team playing with the team in possession with 2 players on each end acting as targets for success ( 1 goal/point achieved) and 2 players in the area.
The red team will initially begin with possession and look to transfer the ball from one end player to the other. The blue team will begin as the defending team and look to win the ball to then keep possession and become the team with possession of the ball.
Area Size/planning:
The playing area will be 30m in length and 20m wide. There is a 3m channel on each side of the playing area. marked with cones and flat markers for the half way line.
This channel will only be used in a regression/progression moment.
Player variations ( numbers attending for session)
12player-3teams -4v4+4
11 players - 3v3 + 5 (neutrals in channels/1 middle), 10 players - 3v3 + 4, 9 players - 3v3 + 3
Timings
4 x 2min with 2 minutes allowed for transitions and interventions. Switch players around after each round and
brief explanations/intervention as required.
Conditions
The exercise will begin with no conditions to evaluate players understanding of the skill, and assessment of standards/skills.
The area has a half way line, which can be used as a reference for defenders and attackers to recognise the spacing and distances.
This line can be used as a progression/regression to restrict/promote player movement within the space. There is also a channel on each side of the pitch that cn be used as part of progressions/regressions if required.
regressions- easier for OOP team
1. Players locked in to their halves - there will be 2 players from each team and neutral player in each half
2. One defender can drop into the zone to match up 3v3.
3. Teams only get points if they play through (split) the defenders - this will encourage them to look for moments to play through rather than go around.
progressions -harder for OOP team
1. an attacker (IP) can use the channel which is unopposed.
2. The attacking team can use the whole area whereas defenders are restricted to their own half
3.the channels are added into the area to make the pitch wider and more area to defend, but forces the principles of wide play.
Mechanics:
Passing -
look on target
eye on ball
angle and approach
align non kicking for alongside ball
strike centre ball with inside/outside foot
correct weighted pass
ankle stability
follow through towards target
Control -
on your toeseyes on ball
get in line with ball
decide and present surface of foot towards the ball
relax on impact

Breaking Lines: IP
This skill session is to encourage to maintain possession of the ball.
Breaking lines when they are possession of the ball, to get the ball up the pitch into the final third.. To do so, the team in possession will look to play through, around or over the opposition by using the neutral players and the end players as targets.
they will also have neutral players within the skill who will force an overload for the team in possession.
