Opponents style: Short passing style
Opponents Formation: 1-4-2-3-1
Key Principle: Effective and controlled possession in middle third looking to link up with Center Foward
What? CM not linking with back and fowards possession and move forward
Who? CM, Fwds
When? When 6, 8 or 10 has possession going forward
Where? Middle to front Third
Why? Because 9 is not making effective and intelligent runs
Summary: In this session I aim to improve my 6, 8 & 10 moving forward in possession & linking up with the 9 by offering options to the 9 other than making forward runs in behind defence.

15x20 grids, duplicated in another drill for remaining 8 players
6 yellow bibs
4 orange bibs
Explanation/Progression
Both teams start with a ball. Everybody must receive and pass the ball before it gets transferred to another grid.
The defender will close off one gate so the player passing ball must be aware of which gates are open.
The other team must also be aware of ball being played into their grid and make a run to receive the ball.
Defender will be changed every few minutes.
Add 2nd defender to increase difficulty but only 1 defender allowed in each gate at all times (still always leave 1 gate open, defenders to slide from gate to gate with direction of the ball)
Repeat as per above once ball gets transitioned to other half.
Coaching Points
Allow the players plenty of opportunities to develop passing and first touch
Allow the players to practice passing and first touch related to the session objective
Place the players in their positions relative to the session objective
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization
2 areas 15x20
Explanation/Progression
The red team aims to maintain possession of the ball and play the ball into the other half of the grid. Once the ball is transitioned into the 2nd half 1 of the attacking players can enter the next half and they attempt to score via controlled possession in either of the 2 wide zones in a 2v1 situation.
The defenders have 2 different roles. Two are allowed to pressure the ball and attempt to intercept or win possession. The third defender defends the line and attempts to prevent passes going from one grid to the other. The third defender, can only move up and down the half way line and cannot enter the grid, until the pass is passed into the other grid then they defend against the 2 attackers in that zone.
Progression- Remove restriction on center line defender and allow them to come into the into the starting zone to create a 4v3 situation. Transition to next zone remains the same.
Team Task:
Can keep possession and pass ball through to 9 in next half.
Player Tasks:
Can you take first touch forward to enable a forward pass
Can you play a ball to a player in a good position to transition the ball to the next zone
Can the FWd make an angled or effective run to receive the ball
Can we transition into the next zone and isolate the defender
Coach’s Cues:
If you receive the ball can you face forward
When the FWD makes the angled run look to find his feet
If you can’t play a forward ball look to play another play who is in a position to find the FWD
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization
18 yard box wide and half pitch long
Play mostly starts with the coach who will feed the ball to the Reds Defense but mix this up at different times to allow the blue side to start with the ball to create a BPO>BP scenario, once the ball is won back then look to coach the movement of the 6,8,9 &10.
Blue team (BPO) score by winning the ball back and taking the ball over the halfway line with controlled possession.
Script
Team Tasks –
Can you create a goal-scoring opportunity?
Can you get a combination between the 6, 8, 9 & 10 that will lead to a goal-scoring opportunity?
Player tasks-
FWD Can you rotate your position with the CM
FWD Can you drop off the shoulder of your defender then make a diagonal run to receive the ball and shoot on goal?
Defense Can you drive forward with the ball?
Can you all the Red players in an advanced position follow all shots in?
Coaching Cues-
When the FWD drops into a deeper role the CM is to become the FWD (rotation of positions)
When the FWD drops of the shoulder of his defender the player in possession is to look for a possible channel ball between defenders for the FWD to angle his run onto.
If the CM split then the Center D's to drive forward and either find the FWD or drive to goal.
When the FWDcreates space for the CM they are to drive forward get a shot on goal.

Teams of 3 in boxes with 4 corners.
One player on each available corner and 1 player with the ball to start.
Player passes the ball to any of the other available players then runs to the spare corner.
The receiving player now plays the pass to the next available player and runs to the spare corner.
The function repeats.
Coaching Points:
The player passing the ball needs to always look at the ball as they move to the spare corner.
Work the function on 2 touch to start with.
One touch to control the ball and the next touch to pass the ball to the next player
Progression:
The progression to this function is to try to encourage the players to work towards a one touch passing function to educate combinational play.
The focus is then on the weight of the pass and using pass appreciation to the player they are passing to. Meaning, understanding where the next pass is going, so playing the pass on the side the receiving player is then going to play the next pass.
