Football Problem

In our recent games , when building up from the back, we having problems against teams that press high (front 2 or front 3).” We want to improve our positional structure, options off on and off the ball, and composure 

 

Create clear, structured build-up to progress the ball through the thirds under pressure.”

Use "SO CHANGE IT" Framework to adapt drills and games to improve player engagement, inclusivity, and skill development. (If a training activity isn't working, use this to adapt the session) 

 

  • S - Safe: Ensure the environment is physically and emotionally safe.
  • O - Observe: Watch if players are engaged and the activity looks like football.
  • C - Coaching Style: Adjust how you instruct—positive engagement and less talking.
  • H - How to Score: Change rules to encourage specific actions, like adding zones.
  • A - Area: Increase or decrease the size of the playing area.
  • N - Numbers: Alter team numbers to increase participation or challenge.
  • G - Game Rules: Modify rules to challenge players (e.g., must pass 3 times before scoring).
  • E - Equipment: Use different balls, coloured cones, or smaller/larger goals.
  • I - Inclusion: Ensure all players, including injured or shy ones, are involved.
  • T - Time: Limit or extend time to score to increase intensity.

Set up

4 x groups of 4 - in 4 lines 

Cones marked out 10-15 yards, each line. 

10-15mins all exercise's. 

Running (gradual build up/variety).

  • Straight line
  • Straight leg kick (swing forward)
  • Side skips/shuffle
  • Hip out (open gates)/Hip in (close gates)
  • Circling partner 
  • Shoulder contact 
  • Quick forwards & Backwards 
  • Building speed 
  • Bounding 
  • Plant & cut

Passing Practice (5 mins)

Warm-up/Passing practice

Set up

4 x cones/poles -  set up in shape of a diamond - consider size of area to work in

Balls - have spare around area in case passes go off target to continue flow

Try have two groups working at the same time next to each other

Pattern.

Pass → follow → support next angle

Follow your pass, movement off the cone important to loose defender and create the angles.

 

Key Coaching Points:

  • Open body to receive
  • First touch away from pressure
  • Move immediately to the next cone after after passing

Variation:Change pattern Have opposite end of diamond start at the same time as well - depending on player numbers and ballsLimit touches on the ball - 2 touch, 1 touchAdd time limitAdd second ballIncrease or decrease size of areaa Race against the other group

Progrsses passing practice into Positional Game 

Add passive defender. Replicate both patterns.

 

Defender goes live, play what you see but must go through the middle players and try to replicate patterns to get from A to B.

What it should look like:

GK starting point

CBs split 6yrd box

FBs high & wide

#6 showing central

Passive defending first to develop shape and positioning first

Manage opposition to work together as a compact unit and apply pressure

  • Create width
  • Find the free player
  • Midfielder must show early

Passing patterns/options

Variation

Add a forward target player instead of three gates who can only work across half-way line.

Add 3 mini goals or 2 mini goals + 1 Big/Med size goal in the middle (depending on GK numbers)
