1v1 Defending technique
-Players in white dribble to opposite line while orange players use good defensive stance to jockey the attacking players
-Progress to opposed. Orange player must try and dribble to the orange players' end. If they do, the orange player now takes the ball and attacks. If the orange players however intercepts the ball and can dribble back to the white players side, the return the ball to the white player to try again.
-Simply, if you defend well, you stay defending.

Organization:
- 20 x 15 yards
- Players pair up, all the balls are in the middle so players can come back pick up a ball and begin another attack
- Players have a designate goal with their partner
- Change defending team at 60 seconds
Activity:
- The attacking player goes into the middle of the field and picks up a ball and attacks the defender. Defenders must defend the goal and win the ball and dribble with pace back into the square.
Progresson:
- The game starts with 1v1, but can be changed 2v2 with 2 goals on each side of the playing area
Coaches Emphasis:
- Defenders must have their knees bent and feet about shoulders width apart so they can move quickly
- Encourage the defenders to concentrate on the ball and not the movement and fakes of the attacker, always change body position to react to the movement of the ball and attacker.
- Defenders win the ball if they can but timing is very important
- Defenders keeping themselves in front of the attacker and not letting him get past is a win, taking the ball is a bonus
- Defending side on and directing the attacker to one side (in a game to the sidelines)

Session Topic: Defending Principles
1v1 Defending to gates
Stage: Stage 1
Set Up:
20 x 15 yards field split into two (Scale to age and level of play), Balls, Bibs, Cones
Time:
10 mins (2 min games to 1 min rest)
Organization:
Coach is trigger to start the game. If the player sends the ball to side A then the defender on that side will pressure the attacker and play 1v1. If the ball is played to side A then the side A goal is worth 1 point and the side B goal is worth 5 points. This tells the defender that they should channel the ball back to their gate, since it is less points. If the ball is played to side B then side A is worth 5 points and the defender should channel back to side B.
Coaching Points:
1st Defender (player closest to the ball) pressures the point of attack
Speed and angle of approach (Banana run, make it obvious what way you want them to go)
Patience and Discipline (Do not dive in, Be patient, Jockey to "channel", and wait for mistake)
Communication (Eye contact, Verbal, Hand Signals) *BE SPECIFIC*
Conditioning (Pace of Play)
