Description

Intended Outcome(s) – what are you trying to achieve

  • Develop familiarity with the ball
  • Begin to understand basic components of dribbling, control and ball striking
  • Improve balance and co-ordination ability to provide them better chances of stayingincontrol of themselves and the ball
  • Provide an enjoyable and engaging session that delivers the intended outcomes

Key Coaching Factors (in sequence):

1. Ball striking ability

2. Close control (‘Messi Touches’, Touches are your friend)

3. Ball Manipulation (What is the focus we are working on)

4. Two-Foot Proficiency (Can we practice the skill with both feet)

Entry SSG (10 mins)

Function:

  • 2v2 across the field (can adjust numbers accordingly, but game remains as is. Realistically no more than 3v3s)
  • End line game (Stop the ball on end line to score a point)
  • Make it, take it (if score, keep possession and can attack opposite way)

Game Rules:

  • No punting, or throwing from a goal kick.
  • Must be dribbled in or passed in
  • Corners, throw-ins can be passed or dribbled in
  • Anytime a player dribbles in they must play a pass before scoring

Coaching Points:

  • Entry game. As soon as kids come down to you get them into teams and get them playing as quick as possible
  • This phase of the session doesn’t have to be coaching intensive as we want them to just play and be creative
  • Float around and give coaching points individually to help them better understanding situations and how they might improve on them next time

For example:

  • If they could have received to go forward but did not, you might ask them what they could have done instead and begin planting seeds

Ball Mastery (10 mins)

Function:

  • All players on a ball and dribbling around the full area
  • 3 different colours of lines (2x blue, 2x orange, 1x white)
  • To begin with all players are dribbling around the area and we are working through different dribbling patterns.
    • However they like, R foot, L foot, inside/outside, etc.
  • When coach shouts a colour, players dribble to that colour line and perform a turn

    • Can be a different turn for each colour

  • Can also work through different skills here as players dribble around, e.g.,

    • 1 = scissors

    • 2 = iniesta

    • 3 = Chop

    • 4 = Maradona

  • Work for 90s bouts and give them rest, this is a time to coach.

For example:

  • Blue = Outside foot chop
  • Orange = Drag back
  • White = Cruyff

Progressions:

1) Raise a colour cone now rather than shouting the colour

Coaching Points:

1) Tight touches (Keep the ball close to the foot or when we might take bigger touches)

2) Different areas of the foot (inside, outside, sole, turns)

3) Speed (When might we speed up & when might we be slower)

4) Awareness (What/who is around us & where is the space)

Ball Striking (10 mins)

Function:

  • Two teams split across from each other
  • Even balls in a square opposite the cone they start at. (Try and keep refilling these as a coach as you go so that you do not run out. If not possible then you can change this to whoever scores most until balls run out wins)
  • Give each player a number (try and match abilities here when doing so)
  • When number is shouted, players must sprint to their box, retrieve a ball, dribble out of the box and strike the ball with their laces into the goal
  • First team to 5 points wins

Progressions:

1. Can force R or L ball striking

2. Can put a zone in place that they must strike the ball before

3. Progress to a 1v1 after (See next slide. This is there if you think you can do it with them. Do not feel that you have to do this but could be something fun to try towards the end.)

Coaching Points:

1. Surface Selection

 a. Using right area of the foot to strike the ball

2. Quality of strike

 a. Middle of foot, middle of ball

3. Close control of the ball

SSG (15 mins)

Function:

  • SSG on a full court
  • No more than teams of 5, still want to maintain small teams to maximise individual touch points on a ball
  • 2 minute games or 1 goal and losing team is off

Game Rules:

  • No punting, or throwing from a goal kick.
  • Must be dribbled in or passed in
  • Corners, throw-ins can be passed or dribbled in
  • Anytime a player dribbles in they must play a pass before scoring
  • Have to be in the attacking half to score.
  • No GKs. Last player back in goal.
  • Make sure no one just stands in the goal, get them involved and playing in the game.

Coaching Points:

  • Minimal at this point, bulk of the coaching should have been done.
  • Time to let the individuals put in to practice what we have worked on throughout the session
  • Individual coaching is encouraged to help them better understand situations and where they might use what we have coached
  • Occasionally might step in to make a point to the group after seeing something glaring in the game if you think it would be beneficial to show but this should be kept to a 1 or 2 max
