In this pre-season session the concept of playing out from the back from goal kick situations is introduced and developed. Players will learn how to play out using a variety of methods (quick interchange passing, switching the play and using our goal keeper) to progress the play out of our defensive third whilst in control and maintain possession against an opposition using two strikers to press.
Key Principle: Structured build up Session Objective: In this session I aim to improve the team's ability to maintain possession by playing out of our defensive third from goal kick scenarios in a controlled manner. This will enable us to progress the ball forward out of our defensive third to assist building the attack in the middle third.

Organisation:
5v5+2+1 GK in a 35m x 30m. Teams play 5v5 with two neutrals playing for the BP team. The aim is for the possession team to progress the ball as quickly as possible from one end of the field to the other and score in the mini goal for a point. The neutrals are restricted to 2 touches. The BPO team try to prevent the BP team from scoring and when they win the ball attack the goal and score to score 1 point.
Variation/Progression:
- Each player on the possession team has a maximum of three seconds to control and release the ball
- Double points for both teams if they score a goal within a certain time.
- Make field wider
- Remove neutrals to make it 6v6 inside the pitch
Team Tasks:
Pass the ball in a controlled manner to get the ball into the middle third as quickly as possible.
Player Tasks:
- Collect and restart play quickly
- Play forward first always, sideways only if you can't go forwards, backwards as a last resort as a result of pressure and no off the ball movement
- Pass and move - move into passing lane after pass to provide passing option for 2/5/6/8/10
- Play in different lines and corridors to other team mates
- Ball carrier to always have options left, right and far at all times
Coaching Cues:
- When in possession after restart from GK, use quick, accurate combination play to escape the pressure, whilst looking for spare player.
- When playing out width and depth must be maintained to stretch the opposition.
- When under pressure look to switch the play through long direct, short combination of pass back to keeper.

Organisation:
6v5 on a half pitch. The white teams attempts to build up from the back to attempt to advance the ball through the half to one of the front three who dribble or pass to a team mate over the half way line which result in 1 point. If the BPO team wins the ball they counter and attempt to score a goal for 2 point with the white recovering to prevent a goal scoring opportunity. In this progression the BPO team have two fast strikers pressing the centre backs hard. Players are to start in playing out formation then adjust once they decide they can't play out.
Variation/Progression:
- Playing long when under extreme pressure
Team Tasks:
Pass the ball in a controlled manner to get the ball into the middle third as quickly as possible.
Player Tasks
Goalkeeper (1):
- If unable to play short, slow down play and allow team to adapt into long ball shape
- Play long pass to 7/11 in space in line with the edge of 18yd box
Centre backs (3/4):
- Jog from playing out positions to long ball positions (just inside the intersections of the D and 18yd)
- Support and provide passing options for midfielders and fullbacks competing for first and second ball from long kick.
- Play forward to furthest available option
- Both to always provide backward options for midfielders under pressure
Fullbacks (2/5):
- Jog from playing out positions to long ball positions (on the edge of the 18yd box just narrower than the corner)
- Support and provide passing options for midfielders/wingers competing for first and second ball
- Win second ball
Defensive Mid (6):
- Support and provide passing options for midfielders/wingers competing for first and second ball
- Win second ball
Centre Mids (8/10):
- Jog from playing out positions to long ball positions (tuck into half space)
- Support and provide passing options for wingers competing for first ball
- Win second ball
Wingers (7/11):
- Jog from playing out positions to long ball positions (stay in half space corridor with starting position deeper)
- Compete and win first ball, if not first ball the second ball
Striker (9):
- Support and provide passing options for wingers competing for first ball
- Win second ball
Coaching Cues:
- Play forward first always, sideways only if you can't go forwards, backwards as a last resort as a result of pressure and no off the ball movement
- When ball is in motion from long goal kick, wingers to meet the ball on the full and control the ball or play first time pass
- When winger is competing for the first ball ensure there are three players surrounding the contest in the ball drop zone to win the second ball
- When possession is won, pass the ball out of the congestion quickly (switch the play)
