Description

Purpose:

  • This is a self-adjusting possession/rondo game allowing work on any possession principles without it remaining too easy or too hard for too long, as it's constantly adjusted for the space. Can add in directional play as well.

Competition:

  • Each team will see how many defenders they can get into the grid and last with. Challenge them to get all opponents into the grid for a point.
  • Make it directional and then it's a competition to see who can get to x number (say 20 or 30) first. Tons of reps that way.

Setup:

  • Grid set up as above, sized to make it relatively easy to keep the ball when there's only 1-2 defenders, to give a chance for success and repetition of the possession principles.

Activity:

  • 5v2 (or 4v1 or whatever numbers work for you) at first
  • Every x passes (or amount of time) for the possessing team, another defender is added.
  • The aim of the defenders is to take possession and transfer it back to their grid, at which time the previous team on the ball would send in their first defender (or two).
  • If the team out of possession just kicks the ball out, the ball stays on that side.
  • If the team in possession kicks the ball out, the new ball is played into the other side.

Progressions:

  • 2 touch
  • 1 touch
  • More of fewer passes brings in a defender
  • Make it directional: the possessing team adds targets at the top and botton of the rectangle. 1 point each time they are able to possess the ball from one target to the other...add another defender at that point. Can play to any preset number as a competition.

Coaching Points:

  • Defending: Closing down pass options. Make them predictable
  • Transition: Get forward quickly (transfer the ball to the other side)
  • Possession: Depending on the focus of the session, any possession based coaching points can be focused on
    • Receiving back foot/First Touch away from pressure
    • Movement
    • Communication
    • Pass Quality (pace, accuracy)
    • Awareness of space

Same thing just animated it to help with the understanding.

Note with this setup, the robbers game found at link below can be a good first activity to progress into this.
