  • 4 players on each side.
  • Mannequin (or obstruction) in the middle to stop central passes.

Explanation

  • Players in the rondo look to maintain possession unopposed.
  • MUST play with two touches;
  • MUST move after you pass;
  • MUST have support left and right of player in possession.

Coaching Points

  • Good ball speed - two touches MAX, firm passes and ball does not stop.
  • Off the ball movement; reacting to the movement of others.

PROGRESSIONS

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Positioning Game

Set Up

  • Area set up 15m-20m square.
  • Area divided into four squares.
  • 6 players on possession team; two players out of possession.

Description

  • 4v1 rondo in one square.
  • Two remaining attackers on outside of area in supporting positions.
  • Defenders mark a half each with the spare defender that is not in the 4v1 waiting in centre of area.
  • Players look to keep possession in 4v1; when the players on the inside of the rondo (players A) receive the ball they look to turn out to play to the outside players (C).
  • When this happens the other players are looking to take up supporting positions to maintain a 4v1 plus outside support.

Coaching Details

Small Sided Game (30 mins)

Small Sided Game 6 v 6 (+GK)

Set Up

  • Pitch set up as half pitch lengthways and about 25m wide and divided into thirds with final thirds longer than middle thirds but tapering in towards goals.
  • In middle third is divided into five channels about 5m wide. (The two widest can only be occupied by the team in possession a defender can enter to engage once the ball enters that zone.)
  • Team structured with 1x CB (#4); 2x FB (#2,#3); 1x MF (#8); 2x FW (wingers - #7,#11)
Explanation

  • In possession they must look to occupy all 5 central zones.
  • Team in possession is looking to build up their play and control possession and the tempo of the game.
  • They are looking to create the opportunity to play a ball in behind the defensive line.
  • For this to occur we are looking for patient build up to a quick speeding of the play when the opportunity presents itself to play in behind the line.
  • Out of possession team must look to be in a 3-3 formation.
Coaching Points

  • We are looking at the positioning and movement of players when they take up supporting positions depending on where the ball is and the movement of their team mates.
  • If the fullback is in the widest channel; can the winger stay narrow.
  • If the winger goes wide can the full back come inside.
  • If the midfielder goes high; can the fullback come in and support underneath.
