2v1 Decisions and movements

Use a 30x25 grid and put gates at each end. Split the kids into two teams (or three groups) and have each team on opposite ends of the field. The game is initiated by one team passing the ball into the second team. The team receiving the ball will send two players and the defending team will only send one player. At this point the three kids on the field will play 2v1. They can pass or dribble through the gate to score. Be sure to switch sides so that both teams get a chance to attack and defend.
•What determines whether you pass or dribble?
•What space can you run into to eliminate the defender if you get the ball?
•When is the overlap beneficial?
•When is a diagonal run beneficial?
•How can a give-and-go eliminate the defender?
Coaching Points:
•Decision to pass or dribble (what’s the defender offering)
•Off the ball movement – how can I eliminate the defender with my movement
oOverlap
oDiagonal run
ocombination play
•Finding a space with a clear path to the ball

Set up one field 25 x 30 with one gate on each end. Split the players into two teams and number the players on each team (ex. 1,2,3,4,5,6). The opposing team should have a player whose number matches a player on the other team. Each team lines themselves up along one touch line. The coach will play a ball into the field and call a number. The player from each team who has that number enters the field to play against their counterpart from the other team. Vary the game and call multiple numbers so that they play in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and even 4v4 situations. Designate which team is attacking which gate. You can even call out situations where there’s numbers up situations.
•How can you eliminate a defender?
•Are you in a clear path to the ball?
•What type of run will be more useful here?

Facilitate the game and help with positions, positioning, and game format. Facilitate a basic scrimmage with a goalkeeper and five field players. Allow the kids to “PLAY” but give guidance when necessary. Use a “coaching in the game” approach to emphasize the topics from this week’s training. Be sure to use the labeled names for the positions!

Individual Footskills (15 mins)
Every player inside a large zone, every player has a ball. Each player dribbles the ball around avoiding contact with other players. On the coach’s signal, the players perform the footskill that was demonstrated. In between signals, the players should be focused on getting frequent touches. They do not need to run extremely fast, but they should be touching the ball very frequently.
•Skills to work on: Forward: Stab Push, Scissors, Double scissors, 1-Foot V-Pull, 2-Foot V-Pull.
