The pitch layout remains the same, except the two mini goals are moved onto the free corners.
Timings:
10 minutes(2x 4 minute blocks, with two minutes in between for rest).
Set up:
The small sided game is set up for 8 players (4v4). One player from each team starts in each quadrant. Players can move anywhere. The coach plays the ball in and the team in possession must try to score in any of the four mini goals. They can exploit overloads by committing a player or more into a quadrant, and with the support of their teammate, they can create a 2v1 scenario. However, if they commit too much and lose possession, they risk forcing a transition for the opposite team to play the ball to a free player and allowing an unopposed attempt at goal. This game is about recognising when and where to exploit an overload on the pitch. If the opposite team win possession, they can transition and score.
Targets and challenges:
- Can you show clear decision decision-making by playing through, around and over the opposition?
- When you receive the ball, look to pass to one of your spare teammates in an open space and move into an attacking space quickly.
- Encourage your teammates to be confident, controlling the ball and identify a potential 2v1 scenario.
Progressions:
- You must move the ball into a relevant quadrant to score in the corresponding goal. You can’t just shoot from any area on the pitch.
- Can you play with a maximum of 3 touches?
- You must dribble past an opponent in order to score.
- Can you control the ball and perform a turn to attack a mini goal multi-directionally?
- Decrease the pitch area size making it harder to retain possession.
Regressions:
- If a player scores they must dribble the ball around the perimeter of the pitch and re-enter. This creates a momentary overload for the team that conceded.
- Players are locked into their quadrant reinforcing the1v1, and increasing time on the ball. If they score a teammate can support them on the next phase of play.

General Practice (10 mins)
Primary focus:
Creating and exploding overload in possession. The players aim is to move the ball around quickly to score and exploit the opportunity by identifying the overload.
Area size:
The area is a 12X12 square with a mini goal on opposite corners, with two mini goals off the pitch for later on.
Timing:
10 minutes (4x 2 minute blocks)
Set up:
The general practice is set up for 8 players (4v4). The pitch is marked into four quadrants with flat cones four players lineup on opposite sides of the pitch. The coach plays the ball into the middle and shouts a number between 1-4, representing the amount of players to enter the pitch from either side. This number can be different for each team to create an overload. The teams must attempt to score in the mini goals..
Targets and challenges:
- Can you move into space to support your teammate on the ball?
- Can you run forward fast with the ball and move into an attacking shape?
- Can you secure the first pass and retain possession?
Progressions:
- You must score within 10 seconds.
- Extra players are called onto the team in possession as this creates a larger overload.
- Can you play with a maximum of 3 touches?
Regressions:
- The coach plays the ball intentionally to the team struggling to win possession.
- The team possession can score an extra points by making 5 consecutive passes.
