Purpose/Objectives

  • Attacking & Defending Principles of Play

Attacking Principles (U10 – U12)

1.      On the Ball

  • Can you run/dribble with the ball?
  • When running with the ball, can you see beyond the ball?
  • Can you change direction when running with the ball?
  • Can you find creative ways to beat your defender?
  • Can you protect the ball away from a defender?

2.      Movement

  • No standing zone!
  • Can you help your teammate with the ball?
  • Where can you move to receive the ball?
  • Can you move and create a diamond/kite?

Defending Principles (U10 – U12)

1.      Delay

  • Can you slow down the opposition?
  • Can you be hard to beat 1 on 1?
  • Can you chase down the player with the ball?
  • Can you get yourself between the ball and the goal?

    Crossing Guards (15 mins)

    Set Up:

    • Divide the area in 3 sections (as above)
    • Divide the players into a group of 3 even groups and 1 neutral player in the middle zone.
    • One team starts in possession with the ball in either end zone. One team starts in the middle zone as defenders.
    • Field size 30 (L) x 20 (W). Middle channel 5 (L) x 20 (W).

    Action:

    • One team starts in possession with the ball in either end zone. 
    • Players can either pass a ball or dribble across the area (one end to the other).
    • Passing the ball to one end to the other is 1 point. Dribbling the ball through middle zone successfully is 3 points.
    • Players in middle section try to win the ball with a tackle if attackers are trying to cross the middle zone.
    • Defenders work on holding up play & timing their tackles..
    Variation/Progressions:
    • The time of sets or size of the area can be adjusted to suit the needs and abilities of the players.

    Player Tips:

    • As Above.

    Coaching Points:

    • Correct tackling and dribbling/running/passing with the ball technique.
    • Players with the ball attack the space in front of you.
    • Quick passing and transfer of possession across the square.
    • Defenders in the middle section work as a team to win the ball.

    Session Timing:

    • Complete 4 sets of 3 minutes with a 1 minute rest in between sets.
