Defending the Box 3v2 or 4v3 (15 mins)

  • Setup:

    • 20x25 yd grid including a goal

    • Attackers start at top of the box

    • Defenders defend the box + goalkeeper (optional)

  • Activity Flow:

    • Attacking team plays 3v2 or 4v3

    • Attackers aim to score; defenders aim to block, delay, and clear

  • Key Coaching Points:

    • Defenders stay compact and close the space

    • First defender pressures; second covers; third balances

    • Communication and body positioning

  • Progression: Add a trailing attacker for late runs; Allow defenders to counter into a mini-goal on winning possession

  • Regression: Add a defender
  • Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

    Challenges: Can the defenders stay compact while tracking movement and marking

    Conditions: Defenders win a point for blocking a shot or forcing a wide attempt

    Targets:Defenders must prevent goals and block central shots

    5v4 Defensive Overload - Stopping Penetration (25 mins)

  • Setup:

    • Area: 25x30 yards (just outside the box, simulating edge of final third)

    • One goal with a GK

    • 5 attackers vs 4 defenders

  • Activity Flow:

    • Ball starts with coach or neutral feeder
    • Attackers attempt to create a chance and score
    • Defenders protect space and win the ball to play into a target or out of bounds
  • Coaching Points:

    • Stay compact and connected – don’t get pulled out by movement

    • Communication between back line and screen

    • Track late runners and shift as a unit

    • Pressure on the ball carrier to limit shooting opportunities

  • Progression: Delayed Defender Entry – Start with 3 defenders, a 4th enters after 5 seconds to simulate late recovery

  • Regression: Add a defender
  • Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

    Challenges: Can defenders hold their shape under overload

    Conditions:

    Defenders earn 1 point for:

    • Forcing a wide shot

    • Intercepting or blocking a pass

    • Successful clearance or counter pass

    Targets:Defenders should try to prevent central penetration and force play wide

    SSG (25 mins)

    • Setup:
    • 40x30 yd area (final third size), full goal at one end, 2 small counter goals at the other

    • 6v6 including 1 GK; defending team protects the big goal

  • Activity Flow:

    • Attacking team builds through midfield into the final third

    • Defending team must stay compact, delay attacks, block shooting lanes, and transition quickly

    • Attacking team scores in big goal

    • Defenders counter to mini-goals upon regaining possession
  • Progression: Defending team must pass to a target player near halfway after regaining possession before scoring

  • Regression: Add a defender
  • Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

    Challenges: Can the defenders stay compact while tracking movement and marking

    Conditions: Defenders get bonus point for forcing a turnover outside the penalty box. Limit attackers to 3 touches to speed up play

    Targets:Can the back line hold a high line without being broken by through balls?
