Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Short crisp passing predominantly using the instep of the foot or other parts if required. Receiving on the back foot with an open body to allow play to progress forwards quickly. Looking to control the ball by trapping it when holding up the play 1v1. Keeping the ball close to the foot with small touches when dribbling within a tight area under pressure.
Technical Tactical
Exploit the overload by frequently finding the spare man. Look to move out of a defending players screen to open passing channels. Keep play on the floor to reduce the chance of 50/50s and turnovers.
Technical Physical
Look to distance the opposition player from the ball by getting your body between them. Upper body strength to prevent opposition getting around you, looking to push yourself backwards into the player. Use an outstretched arm to maintain distance between you and the defender, keeping it below the face to push them away.
Technical Psychological
Increase awareness by scanning frequently, looking for the spare man, teammate and oppositioning position thus aiding quicker more decisive play. Look to make quick decisions, when to pass to the spare man, which players transition to the adjacent box, when to release the ball after holding it up.
Technical Social
Look to ensure players communicate between each other when transitioning, only two may go and the decision has to be made quickly through verbal cues to support the player 1v1 asap. Look to encourage lots of talking when passing in the 3v1 rondos, lots of asking for the ball, confirmations and positivity.

Transitional Rondo Boxes (20 mins)

Area Size

15x20 (Rondo Boxes) 15x25 (Middle Section)

How To Play

Players in possession will play over two rondo boxes looking to score points through successfully playing into the adjacent box after completing a set number of passes without loosing possession. Once the set number of 5 passes is completed the players will look to switch play into their teammate located in the opposing box. The player who receives must hold up possession 1v1 until two (maximum) of his teammates transition across to support him and start the rondo.

Defending players cannot cross between the boxes however if they win the ball the player who has conceded possession will swap out and become the defender. The 'Safe Zone' is the small shaded zone located outside each rondo box, if players are struggling to hold up the ball 1v1 they may 'come short' to receive in this zone. The defending player cannot enter this zone and must wait until play enters the box.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Short passing with various part of the foot to keep play circulating. Receiving on the back foot with an open body to allow play to progress forwards quickly. Utilising various ways of controlling the ball to deal with differing situations.
Look to use central player to release pressure and trigger runs short and in-behind. Look to exploit overload with third man runs in behind, via under or overlaps.
Decision making, when to run in-behind, when to release the pressure and play centrally, when to play bounce passes or dribble to draw in the opposition. Trying to anticipate passes, recognising when to make a run by analysing a teammates body shape with the ball. Understanding our positioning, look to operate in triangles, one player creating depth, one in the half space and one wider on the touchline, look to frequently scan to see where teammates are positioned and if they've rotated.
Technical Social
Look to use players that would typically play these positions, in turn aiding communication and understanding between them on match days. Lots of verbal cues to instruct players on movements and positioning. Players in deeper roles should look to instruct more advanced players and take roles of leadership.

Exploiting Wide Overloads (20 mins)

Area Size

60x45 (Half Pitch)

How To Play

3v2 in both wide areas with a +1 operating through the middle, try ensure this player is always your central midfielder or similar, both wide areas will play at the same time, therefore the central player must look to scan frequently and support the side in need of the additional player.

The aim of the practice is to exploit 3v2s in wide areas and score within either goal provided in the final third. Scoring in the byline goal scores one point where as scoring in the 18 yard box goal scores two points. This is to display realism with regards to wide players crossing balls into dangerous areas.

If the ball is turned over the defenders must look to drive out and score in the goal located on the half way line to score a point. Play will start from a player who usually operates in a deeper role to come forwards (fullback, DM or centre back)  they should look to vary their passes and passing options, keeping players on their toes. If the ball leaves play via the touchline look to restart with a throw in for realism, if it leaves play any other way restart from the half way line.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Short passing with various part of the foot to keep play circulating at speed. Close control to maintain possession in congested areas. Keeping the ball close to the foot using small touches when dribbling within a tight area under pressure. Larger touches when looking to burst into space in behind a full back. Correct technique to achieve a variety of differing crosses, low, lofted, whipped.
Technical Tactical
Exploit the overload by frequently finding the spare man developing a triangle of options. Look to move out of a defending players screen to open passing channels. Look to use central players to release pressure and trigger runs short and in-behind. Strikers and attacking midfielder should look to attack different areas in the final third upon delivery. Look to exploit third man runs in behind using bounce passes or dribbling to draw in opposition players.
Technical Physical
Speed and acceleration to exploit spaces quickly and beat opposition players. Strength and use of the body to protect and shield possession. A,B,Cs to aid dribbling with the ball at pace and executing the correct passing and shooting techniques.
Technical Psychological
Decision making, when to run in-behind, when to release the pressure and play centrally, when to play bounce passes or dribble to draw in the opposition. Trying to anticipate passes, recognising when to make a run by analysing a teammates body shape with the ball. Understanding our positioning, look to operate in triangles, players creating depth, operating in half spaces and on the touchline, they must frequently scan to see where teammates are positioned and if they've rotated. Speak with the attacking midfielder, see if he can look to operate exclusively within the half spaces to aid our positioning and provided more horizontal depth.
Technical Social
Position players appropriately that would typically play their match day positions with occasional rotation, this aids communication and understanding between them on match days. Encourage verbal cues to help instruct players with movements and positioning.

Chance Creation Via Wide Overloads (20 mins)

Area Size

60x45 (Half Pitch)

How To Play

A progression from the previous practice that now involves the end product of our chance creation. The aim for the team in possession is to work the ball in wide areas to develop and exploit crossing or passing opportunities into the strikers or attacking midfielder.

Play will begin from the 'Defensive Midfielder' who can only operate within the shaded middle zone after starting play. This player can be used as an escape valve to release pressure if teams are struggling to progress the ball. In wide areas teams should look to develop 3v2 overloads with the attacking midfielder moving into those areas to develop passing triangles and utilise third man runs. The attacking midfielder can also look to finish created chances by sitting on the edge of the box or driving into it. Look to encourage players to use what they learnt in the previous practice, what type of ball to deliver if driving to the byline? or looking to cross the ball early?. Strikers must work as a team to exploit the 2v1 situation in the 18 yard box and finish as many moves as possible. If play is turned over the whites or defenders must look to break out quickly and score in the goals located on the halfway line.

Play will restart from the 'Defensive Midfielder' when out of play or dead, however if play stops and a throw in can be taken it can be restarted from there. Play will rotate between both wide areas giving players in those hard working areas breathers, allowing them to recuperate. This also allows from the strikers to practice receiving delivers from both sides of the pitch.
