Passing Practice

Game Model Moment:

DO3 PRESSING

Key Principle:

Pressing - Apply pressure.

Team Principle:

  • Decision making on timing, the area, and the way of pressing: when we press high, when we press in mid-third, we press to win the ball or press to win time.
  • Lock opponents to one side against the sideline.
  • Deal with their 2 potential attacking strategies : A) direct play (be prepared for the aerial challenge or lofted pass); B) switch play ( recover & re-press)
  • Creating an active pressure zone and a non-active area
  • Making numerical superiority around the ball.
Key Messages:

  • DM on 2 types of collective pressing A) high press (DO3) driven by attackers or B) protect+ press (DO2) organised by CM's
  • Press collectively ( numerical advantage ) opposition to force them playing long (DO3): rest defence
  • In pressure zone , stop opponent switching the ball and break our press ( keep them in same channel)
  • If FB's or CDM'sleave the line to join to press, CB's need to respond quickly to close the gaps
  • Co-ordinated, aggressive intense pressing actions as a unit

Session Objective:

Support the players knowledge and understanding with high pressing scenarios.

Player Tasks / Coaching Points

  • DO3: Strikers position shows our press direction (messaging) while players close to pressure zone make numbers around the ball (distance, angle )
  • Timing of ball released is key to press, NOT time of the ball received
  • 2 phases DO3 press, DO2 press Quick aggressive press on the front foot by players around ball while others act quickly to collectively press

Explanation:

- Setup as pictured and create one attacking team and one pressing team. Create two areas and rotate the four teams around so they all play against each other.

- In a 1v1, the pressing player starts play by passing to the attacker, the attacker can get 1 point if they dribble the ball through the gate and 2 points if they can score in the goal. If the pressing player wins the ball they aim to score in the goal at the top of the practice.

- The attacking team will always have one player in the other half to the first receiving player, they can pass to this player to score. This player rotates through each go.

  • 2 phases DO3 press, DO2 press Quick aggressive press on the front foot by players around ball while others act quickly to collectively press

Explanation:

- Organise two teams and split each team into groups of three, the defending team begin on the half way line and the attackers set up next to the goal. The game begins with the defenders playing the ball into the goalkeeper, as soon as they have done this both a set of defenders and attackers enter the pitch. The defenders (pressers) have to try and win the ball back from the attackers and try and score; whilst the attackers have to score in either of the goals on the half way line, with a one touch finish. Once a goal has been scored or the ball goes out of play, the next wave begins. Rotate the attackers and defenders regularly.
