Aim:
- Improving players in 1v1 defending relative to the goal
Organization:
- 14x14yds
- 3-5 players on each team
- Attacking team scores on the goal (must be past blue cone to shoot), defending team score by passing to a teammate
- Defenders have 1 player on each side (each player has a number) depending on what number the coach calls, that is who defends.
- Once the coach calls a number, the game starts
- If the coach calls a new number, previous game is over
- Coach can rotate defenders around so they are defending new spots
- Rotate lanes every 8 minutes (4 mins for each group attacking/defending)
Coaching Points:
- Make it small
- Defender decide where attacker goes
- Tackle with correct foot
- Position body correctly (side on, distance)
- Step in front to win ball
- Don't dive in/overcommit
- Don't allow shot
- Where do you want them to go? How can you make them go there? Are you making it small? What foot should you tackle with?
Progressions / Variations:
- Can shoot whenever
- Add a keeper
- Rotate and swap defenders/attackers

Space and Time Awareness warm up / defending movement (10 mins)
Aim:
- Coordination/defending warm up - to improve coordination, and engage mentally before training
Organization:
- Starting with juggling, must be with a different surface of foot every time
- Squares with 8 players, one player from A and one from D dribble across diagonally at the same time, once they reach other side, they pass over the ball, and then must shadow their opponent as they dribble to their side
- Players must make sure they are not running into other players, and are using proper defensive technique/stance to jockey/shadow
- Can improve the coordination aspect if needed by combining two movements and having players do something as they move backwards
Coaching Points:
- Be aware of time and space
- Don't run into others
- How should you move to defend your player
Progressions / Variations:
- Adding in second movements
- When attacker sprints then defender needs to turn and sprint also
- When a designated player in the group moves to a new cone (rotates one left or right) everyone else in that square must do the same
