  • Looking to develop players understanding of how to penetrate the opposition using Depth, Width and Length with position specific coaching points.

8v4 Rondo-Set Up

Set up as seen.

  • Play across the width of the Penalty Area. 
  • Aim of the practice is for the Attacking Team (Red) to attempt to get the ball from the GK (1) to the Striker (9).
  • If they achieve this, they then must look to maintain possession and look to return the ball back to the GK (1).
  • If the Defending Team (Blue) win the ball, the must look to pass the ball to the GK as quickly as possible, acting as a counter Attack. 

  • Looking to develop players understanding of how they can use Width, Depth and Length to penetrate through, around or over the opposition. 
  • Also to understanding the position specific roles and responsibilities in order to create space for themselves and teammates.

  • As a team, looking to create triangles all over the pitch.
  • This gives the players the option to play around, through or over the opposition.

  • Look to develop players understanding on the principles of depth, width and length to create passing angles. 
  • In this practice, the Depth is provided by the GK (1).
  • The Width is provided by both Full backs (2) (3) & both Wingers (7) (11).
  • The Length is provided by the Striker (9).

Width 
  • As the Full Backs and Wingers provide the width, the opposition may attempt to mark these players.
  • This leaves the Central Pivot (6) in this example, free, allowing the pivot to receive and to penetrate the opposition in central areas to find the Striker (9) in 1-2 passes. 
  • This is a very effective method to penetrate the opposition and play through the thirds in the quickest way.

Width:

  • If the opposition decide to stay compact and defend central areas, this leaves the outside players free to receive and play AROUND the opposition. 
  • Although this is not as effective as penetrating through central area (takes more passes and therefore more time), it provides the team in possession other passing options to progress up the pitch.

Depth: Drawing Out defending team 

 

  • Depth may encourage the defending players, Blue (7) (9) in this instance to press the player in possession GK (1).
  • This press creates space for players to receive Red (2) (3) (6). If the GK times their pass correctly, these players will have more time and space on the ball to advance up the pitch. 

  • The same applies to the Pivot when they receive the ball. If the opposition Press Blue (6) (8), then the Pivot can find either winger or the Striker. 
  • Again, if the pass is timed right, this allows these players more time and space on the ball.

  • In this drill, the Length is provided by the Striker (Red 9). 
  • If the opposition Blue (6) (8) decide to block a central pass into the striker, the the Attacking Team (Red) should look to keep possession and move the opposition around, creating gaps to penetrate. 
  • In this situation the CM (6) could look to utilise his Wide Players (7) (11) to play around the opposition, or play a 1-2 to draw before playing a central penetrative pass into the striker.
