Football Slalom20 mins

Organisation

Split players into two equal teams, each player to have a ball.

Set out 2 x slalom course as above.

Instructions

Player 1 from each team dribbles through the gates.

As soon as the player in front passes through the second gate, the next player commences, and so on.

After having passed through the last gate, the players return - running with the ball down the outside and rejoining the line

Coaching Points

Close control through the gate - explosive pace out of the gate.

Progressions

1. Set out yellow cones as indicated. As players run back with the ball, they must turn around the furthest yellow cone from them, repeat around the nearest yellow cone, and race back to join the line.

2. At the last gate, players must use the sole of their foot to roll the ball all the way around a cone 3 times before proceeding.

3. Introduce a competitive element between teams- race between two players set out finishing gates just before the line of players - first player back through the finishing gate wins.

4. Players must go around one of the cones of the gate in a full circle before advancing (see yellow team above) - inner side foot turn - outside foot turn. Players make decision which cone they go around. Players try to keep as close to the cone as possible when effecting a turn and sprint away when they conclude the turn.

5. Players repeat 4 above but in pairs.

Outside Switch Possession20 mins

Organisation

Create grid 30 x 30.

Split players into 2 teams - 6 x white; 6 x yellow plus a neutral player (13 players in total).

Instructions

4v4+1 in the middle.

Players aim to keep possession with their own players and the neutral player.

Players can only pass to their own player on the outside.

Once the ball is passed to a player on the outside, the player who passed the ball takes the place of the outside player and the outside player joins the middle.

Keep a fast tempo concentrating on close control when in possession of the ball and when receiving the ball.

Progressions

1. 2 touch for all players

2. Make all players 1-touch and add another neutral player.

Game is scalable - add numbers to teams and make grid bigger.

Formations 2-220 mins

Organisation

Split players into two teams, both playing 2-2 formation.

Classic 2 Defenders and 2 Attackers.

May lead to Defender/Attcker categorisation - all players are attackers in futsal!

A closed 2-2 is good for defensive purposes in the danger area.

Instructions

After 5 mins, take one team to one side and change formation to a 2-1-1 as set out overleaf, and adopt tactics re kick off and corners.

Formations 2-1-1

Great if we possess a 'Pele' player - who can dribble through everyone and score.

But - front player is also first line of defence and must be prepared to pressure the first man coming out with the ball.

Two defenders must work as a team, one advances, one takes a more defensive role.

Players must be prepared to slide as necessary and attack as a unit, supporting the front player.

2-1-1

Other Points

Regular subs enable players to give 100% for short 5-10 min bursts.

Pass, pass and pass to create a good shooting opportunity when the other team are compact in defence.

Toe Shot - 5 points of contact - quicker shot achieved.

Sole use - gives extra fraction of a second - important when playing in small spaces.

Even in a 2-1-1 ALL players are defenders and ALL players are attackers - think basketball!

Kick off - Roll and toe - requires a powerful and accurate toe shot. after a short, really short, pass at kick off, the players immediately takes a shot on goal. Ideally catch the goalie off guard and score. even if you don't score, you put your opponents on their toes from kick off - psychological advantage. If it strikes one of their players, they may flinch the next time the ball comes. Plus, even if we miss, next time, try the fake roll and toe, where player fakes a shot and instead dribbles through the opposing team for a closer shot.

Corners - aim for the goalies legs - other players try to move off the goal line to draw defenders away and leave a clear line of sighht to the goalkeeper - then attack the space as the ball comes in.
