Light intensity tactical session working on two in-possession corner kick routines and two in-possession free kick routines.

Warm up

Dynamic warm-up (no ball) (5 mins)


Set up:

  • 4 lines of 3 cones, 30 yards long, 10 yards wide
  • 3-4 players per line
Play:

  • Dynamic, football-specific movements without a ball
    • 2x laps: Jogging
    • 2x laps: sidestepping
    • 2x laps: open the gate to close the gate
    • 2x laps: High kick to lunge (with trunk rotation)
    • Increment run; 50% max, 75% max, Sprint
    • Backwards to first cone, forwards to start (initiate next player to start), sprint to end cone, jog home

Set up:

  • Grids of 30x15 yards
  • Teams of 3, 1 ball
Play:
  • Start with the ball in a player's hands at one Goal zone line
  • Aim to catch a ball in the Goal zone to score a point; if successful, the defending team restarts from their Goal zone
  • Players must follow the pattern of a Throw, then a header, then a catch. any deviation from the pattern results in the defending team restarting
Coach/Observe:

  • Create space - create separation from defenders; hands up and on, feints and fakes
  • Movement - Checks, change of direction, change of pace
  • Aggression- Attack the ball be first to it

    Corner Routine #1 (near post—crowd the keeper)


    Trigger:

    The corner taker holds his left arm up.

    Set up:

    #10 and #11 (#10 & #7 on opposite corner) set up to take the corner. (looking like an in-swinging and an out-swinging corner)

    #3 start edge of the 18 yard area near side to corner

    #2,6,7,&8 start on the opposite (far) corner of the 18 yard area

    The corner taker signals what pattern is to be played (e.g. one arm up for pattern #1)

    Runs:

    #2 checks right and then runs to the near post

    #3 runs to the edge of the 'D'

    #6 checks left and then runs to the far post

    #7 checks left and the runs to the penalty spot

    #8 fakes a run and returns to the starting position (cover for an overhit cross or flick-on)

    #9 sets a block on the Goalkeeper

    #10 checks right to create a supporting pass

    Coach Observe

    • Triggers - visual cue from the corner taker and runs
    • Create space - create separation from defenders; hands up and on, feints and fakes

    Corner Routine #1 (near post—crowd the keeper)


    Trigger:

    The corner taker holds both arms out to side.

    Set up:

    #10 and #11 (#10 & #7 on opposite corner) set up to take the corner. (looking like an in-swinging and an out-swinging corner)

    #3 start edge of the 18 yard area near side to corner

    #2,6,7,&8 start on the opposite (far) corner of the 18 yard area

    The corner taker signals what pattern is to be played (e.g. one arm up for pattern #1)

    #3 checks right, then runs to near post'

    #6 to where #3 started

    #7 checks left and the runs to the penalty spot

    #11 passes the ball short to #10 then overlaps, #10 lays the ball into space for #11 to cross or shoot far post

    Freekick- Triangle routine

    

    This freekick is used in front of the goal in a shooting opportunity. Five to ten yards out from the 18 yard area.

    Set up:

    • #9 Sets a visual block on the Goalkeeper (in an offside position),
    • #7 or #11 (depending on where the FK is) starts at the edge of the 18-yard in a position that draws a defender out of the shooting line
    • #11 Sets a block on the edge of the defenders' wall
    • #6, #8 and #10 set up in a 'triangle' as depicted
    Pattern:
    • #6 initiates movement by playing a short pass to #8, then runs to the side of the wall; #10 makes a run to where #8 is.
    • #9 runs to an onside position
    • #8 stops the pass and backs off 5 steps
    • #10 hits a shot on goal

    • Movement - to create blocks and allow a path to the goal

    This freekick is used in front of the goal in a shooting opportunity. Five to ten yards out from the 18 yard area.

    Set up:

    • #9 Sets a visual block on the Goalkeeper (in an offside position),
    • #7 or #11 (depending on where the FK is) starts at the edge of the 18-yard in a position that draws a defender out of the shooting line
    • #11 Sets a block on the edge of the defenders' wall
    • #6, #8 and #10 set up in a 'triangle' as depicted
    Pattern:

    • #8 makes a supporting run for #10
    • #10 crosses the ball hard and low for #7,#9 or #11 to finish
