Description

We want to work on ball retention. Possession also incorporates passing which will help with players overall game

Chronological: U9

Sport Age: Average 2 years

Team Characteristics: High energy. All players enjoy time with the ball. There is a desire to grow and learn. Some players are more adaptable to explaining a activity in the session plan while others need the repetitions and learn from their mistakes. Very competitive group so each activity needs to have a goal to reach. All want to be the group with the highest score at the end.

Intro (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 2v2 to goal

Instructions:

  • 2v2 to goal
  • want the players to get max touches on the ball to begin training.
  • quick 4 mins games.
  • every team plays eachother once.
  • each team is allowed to pick their own name.
  • tell the players to keep track of their records

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • keeping an eye out for simple fundamental skills.
  • passing, receiving, dribbling, shooting.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Make them get a certain amount of passes before shooting.
  • P: Cant shoot from your own half of the field.

Learning Objectives

Ball movement. Finding the open spaces on the field. Get into passing lanes. Head up.

Main (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 2 teams of 4
  • 2 sections separated down the middle 20x20

Instructions:

  • Each team starts on their own zone. 1 ball between 4.
  • Passing, receiving and moving off the ball.
  • Cant pass to the same player twice in a row.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Can we pass to a teammate correctly. Inside of the foot and laces. No toes.
  • Make sure we arent just kicking the ball when its rolling to us. Receive and find another teammate.
  • How many passes can we make without the ball going out of play.
  • After a few minutes take one player from each group and make them a defender in the opposing grid. Make it a 3v1.
  • When it gets to 3v1. What team can get the most passes before the defender interrupts the play.
  • Switch out the defenders every few minutes.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P/R: Depending on the play if need be we can make the grid either bigger or smaller.
  • P: Ball cant stop moving if youre in possession of it.
  • P: Due to the energetic nature of this team and the competitiveness. Put a small goal on each end of the two grids and see what group can score more points. 5 passes equal 3 points and scoring a goal is only 1 point.

Conditioned (20 mins)

Organization:

  • 40x40
  • 6 players on offense (Robbers)
  • 2 defenders (Cops)

Instructions:

  • Cops & Robbers
  • 6v2 Possession.
  • Switch defenders every 4 mins.
  • Offensive team (Robbers) Start with every 5 passes is a point.
  • Defending group of 2 (Cops) If you win the ball try to either pass to myself or Parent coach on outside of the grid for 2 points or if you can score a goal on either end of the grid it is one point.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • 6v2 remind the boys to use the whole field. (Peanut butter) Spread out.
  • Can we find an open teammate?
  • Passing, receiving correctly. Playing with our heads up. Make the ball do the work.
  • Dont chase the ball all over the field.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P/R: Add or take away a defender.
  • P/R: Make the target pass number higher or lower depending on how play is going.
  • P/R: Make the grid either smaller or bigger.

Match (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Open scrimmage
  • 4v4 to goal
  • 2 pugg goals side by side on each end

Instructions:

  • 4v4 to goal
  • No shooting from your own half
  • All balls that go out behind goal no matter what start with goal kick.
  • Use halfway line as break out line example.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Can we stay spread out.
  • Can we find the open man.
  • Can we create attacking opportunities, 2v1, 1v1
  • Passing and receiving correctly
  • Technically correct when passing, shooting, dribbling
  • Are we helping one another on the field

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P/R: Make field bigger or smaller.
  • P: 5 successful uninterrupted passes equal a goal
  • R: If one team is struggling, switch players around or make it that you cant defend unless opposing team comes into your half.
