Gate Passing & Checking Out (10 mins)

Title: Passing/Receiving & Checking Out

Purpose:

Checking back to the ball to receive and pass before then checking out.

 

Organization & Objective:

Create two - 2 yard gates and place them 5-7 yards from one another. Have a single cone 5 yards behind the left hand cone. 2-4 players between the gates in a straight line. 1 ball. Players are to play 2 touch passes to their teammates in the other gate. After playing their pass, they check out to the left and back pedal to the blue cone before then getting back in line. Players continue to cycle back in line and continue the rotation. Play for 60-75 seconds before making coaching points. Do 3-4 rounds, challenging players to have better quality every round.

 

Progressions:

  • Players check out to the right hand side. 

  • Make a competition. How many accurate passes in 60 seconds? Or if you have multiple groups, who can get the most accurate passes?

  • Increase distance of passes.

 

Coaching Points:

  • On your toes ready to receive.
  • Ankle locked and inside of the foot to play every pass.
  • Accurate, well weighted passes on the ground,
  • Good first touch sets you up.
  • Call for the ball from your teammate.

4 Player Pass, Receive, Switch (10 mins)

Title: 4 Player Pass, Receive, & Switch

Purpose:

Passing, receiving, and moving with efficiency & effectiveness. 

 

 

Organization & Objective:

Create a square 6x6 yds. One player in front of each cone. 1 ball. Players on the same side play 2 passes before sending the 3rd pass diagonal to the players on the opposite side. After playing the diagonal pass the players switch corners. The opposite side players play 2 passes back and forth before again playing the 3rd pass diagonally and then switching corners with one another. Play 2 touch for 1 minute. Do 3-4 rounds challenging players to be better every round. 

 

Progressions:

  • Increase number of passes before playing diagonally.

  • Play 1 touch.

 

Coaching Points:

  • On your toes ready to receive.
  • Ankle locked and inside of the foot to play every pass.

Switching play - 3v3 + Targets (25 mins)

 

Title: Liverpool 2 Direction Possession.

 

 

 

Purpose: Moving the ball away from pressure while changing the point of attack

 

 

Organization & Objective:

 

 

 8-12 players. 25x25 yard grid. There will be 4 players on the outside. Two players from each team on opposite sides. Connect passes with inside players while trying to change the point of attack from east to west or north to south. Team with the ball should be trying to find central players to switch the point of attack. A team is rewarded a point if they hit both of their target wall players without being dispossessed. Rotate outside players in every 3 minutes.

 

 

 

Progressions:

 

  • Two touch max for outside players.
  • All inside players are to touch the ball between wall players if they are to be rewarded a point. 
  • Inside players follow your pass and replace the outside player. Outside players first touch must be positive into space and away from defenders.

 

 

Coaching Points:

 

  • Quick off ball movement. Move to open space and adjust your angle to be in a supportive position.
  • Play with urgency. Stay relaxed but play quick.
  • Play backwards to your wall if there is pressure on you.
