Technical 1v1 warm up
Organization:
- Use the large square and add 2 much smaller squares to 2 sides to be used as endzones.
Instruction:
- 2 teams will play 1v1 and try to get to the opposite endzone.
- The team with the most players with balls in the endzones wins the match.
- Switch which team gets to start with the ball. Allow free play for a few moments then introduce (one at a time) the 4 steps to properly closing down an attacker.
Coaching points:
- Where you would push a player to?
- Attackers weak foot
- Side line to use it as a second defender
Coaching points:
- Freeze the activity only to show the rules of defending
- Correct the players as you see issues.
- EMPHASIZE leaving some space (Not being able to touch the attacker at first).
- Force the attacker to make the first move
Progressions:
- A supporting player to force a 2v1 advantage to the defenders

1v1 and 2v1 technical
Organisation:
- 2 players defending the goal in their zone
- 1 attacker with the ball attacking both goals
Instructions:
Two defenders work together to defend 2v1 against an attacker who can score in either of the target goals.
In this situation one defender must go to apply pressure on the attacker with the other defender taking up a supporting position.
The defenders try to stop the attacker in a 2v1 situation.

This time we players play 2v2 but everyone still has to stay in their zones so still defending 1v1 and moving to cover the partner

The defenders still have to stay in their zones but the attackers can move freely.
This is the hardest test as while one defender goes to pressure the other supports. Now a run off the ball from the attacker not in possession can cause confusion between the two defenders. Therefore, communication is vital.
When competent at this practice your players are ready to play a normal game and defend a range of match situations effectively.
