Description

This session is aimed around 10 people taking part in an hour session of a moderate ability with a traditional session style which as per The FA (2023) allows me to gradually increase the difficulty using 3 drills, one being a blocked, one being variable and a small sided game. This session will take up approximately a quarter of an 11-a-side pitch.

The theory behind this session is that I want my players to be able to press from the front, being able to properly rotate who they are marking whilst effectively communicating to ensuring they push the ball in field where there are more bodies. This is because as per opta analyst (2023) turnovers high up the pitch have been rising steadily in the premier league with an average of 16 per game. opta analyst also goes on to state that over the last few season approximately 15% of these have resulted in goals with another 15% leading to high xG chances. This has resulted as per statsbomb (2024) in this being the most effective method in the premier league to create chances just above set pieces.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
improve the technique when pressing on getting low to the ground, and shaping your body to show the player to a side
Technical Tactical
improve the decision making of the pressing in regards to when and how
Technical Physical
improve the turning, twisting, balance, jogging, side stepping of the defending players and the cardiovascular and muscular endurance of both sets of players
Technical Psychological
improve the decision making as to when they should step in and how aggressive to show them outside
Technical Social
increase the relationship and teamwork of the players with the ball

blocked 1v1 defending (5 mins)

this is to be set up in the form of a 15(W)x15(L) yard zone split in two with flat disks.

Play 1v1 across 2 zones. Cannot be more than 1 attacker and 1 defender in each zone rotating personnel each go

equipment - pack of flat disks, pack of cones, 12 balls

progressions

-increase the numbers to 2v2

- add time limits

regressions

-reduce the size of the zone

conditions - 2 touch -> 1 touch -> inside of foot

targets - get possession within 5 seconds -> within 10 seconds

challenges - can you get ball-side goal-side, low centre of gravity, show them the outside

coaching points

- 1st Defender - Close down quickly, pressure the ball. Slow down/delay the attacker

- 2nd Defender - Provide cover to double up for the dribble, positioning to intercept/block a pass/shot

- Communication - Clear, commanding, detailed

- Transition Quickly

interventions

- coaching process, freeze, ask why its not working, talk through whats needed, give demonstration - use drive by on one zone fly by on the rest (show them inside)

transition to next drill - go over to the other set up, give black job to get the ball and grab a drink, emphasise the quickness needed, have a meeting with the white team to give feedback and explain next drill, dont give all the answers immediately, let them drink, can do very quick fly by, remind them of technique

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical

Technical Physical
improve the cardiovascular endurance, running, kicking, stopping, turning, balance and power of the pressing players
Technical Psychological
improve the communication between the defensive players
Technical Social
increase the teamwork of the players off the ball

variable pressing in the final third (15 mins)

equipment

2 small goals, 1 medium goal, 12 balls, 6 bibs of the same colour (green)

setup in a 40(W)x35(L) yard area

progressions

- Coach can recreate various scenarios & starting positions.

- Add additional attacker to increase difficulty

regressions

- alter starting positions to be closer

-allow them to switch without pressure, players still close the new ball position

conditions -

targets -  get the ball back within 15 seconds

challenges - can you talk before pressing, can you make the interception, can you force them into an incorrect pass

coaching points

- Commitment & communication - All must press or drop together to have success.

- Compactness - Tight, dont allow gaps to penetrate

#3 - Nearest player pressures the ball. Slows down/delays the attacker, shows inside

#10 & #9 - Provide cover by marking the cb and near cm, double up for the dribble, positioning to intercept/block a pass, ballside-goalside

#2 - Tucks in to provide balance & 'weak side' support by marking far cm

ALWAYS LEAVE FURTHEST PLAYER AS HES THE LEAST DANGER

interventions as above. remember the full coaching process, use freeze in this drill NEAREST, AROUND THE BALL, FURTHEST AWAY

transition to next drill by lifting the conditions and playing normal small sided game, GIVE FLY-BY AND POSITIVE RIENFORCEMENT

order of removal for lack of numbers  - gk - cb - 10 --- ensure man advantage at all times
