This session is aimed around 10 people taking part in an hour session of a moderate ability with a traditional session style which as per The FA (2023) allows me to gradually increase the difficulty using 3 drills, one being a blocked, one being variable and a small sided game. This session will take up approximately a quarter of an 11-a-side pitch.
The theory behind this session is that I want my players to be able to press from the front, being able to properly rotate who they are marking whilst effectively communicating to ensuring they push the ball in field where there are more bodies. This is because as per opta analyst (2023) turnovers high up the pitch have been rising steadily in the premier league with an average of 16 per game. opta analyst also goes on to state that over the last few season approximately 15% of these have resulted in goals with another 15% leading to high xG chances. This has resulted as per statsbomb (2024) in this being the most effective method in the premier league to create chances just above set pieces.

equipment
2 small goals, 1 medium goal, 12 balls, 6 bibs of the same colour (green)
setup in a 40(W)x35(L) yard area
progressions
- Coach can recreate various scenarios & starting positions.
- Add additional attacker to increase difficulty
regressions
- alter starting positions to be closer
-allow them to switch without pressure, players still close the new ball position
conditions -
targets - get the ball back within 15 seconds
challenges - can you talk before pressing, can you make the interception, can you force them into an incorrect pass
coaching points
- Commitment & communication - All must press or drop together to have success.
- Compactness - Tight, dont allow gaps to penetrate
#3 - Nearest player pressures the ball. Slows down/delays the attacker, shows inside
#10 & #9 - Provide cover by marking the cb and near cm, double up for the dribble, positioning to intercept/block a pass, ballside-goalside
#2 - Tucks in to provide balance & 'weak side' support by marking far cm
ALWAYS LEAVE FURTHEST PLAYER AS HES THE LEAST DANGER
interventions as above. remember the full coaching process, use freeze in this drill NEAREST, AROUND THE BALL, FURTHEST AWAY
transition to next drill by lifting the conditions and playing normal small sided game, GIVE FLY-BY AND POSITIVE RIENFORCEMENT
order of removal for lack of numbers - gk - cb - 10 --- ensure man advantage at all times

coaching points- reinforce what's been said in last 2 drills, look what's going on, try let them play
interventions- minimal, fly-by, look out for players not pressing and moving to there man allowing the press to be broken, use this to evaluate the drill
