Drill (20 mins)

Organisation

- 20x40m area split into thirds

- 10 players

- Coach Defending team (blue); GK, RB, CB, CB, LB

- Manage Attacking team (red); RM, CM, CM, LM, ST

- Ball starts with GK, who will re-enact poor distribution and will deliver the ball to any of the red midfielders. Must pass the ball 5 times in their area before trying to pass (floor only) to their ST. ST to score.

- Defenders to defend the ball going through their area. If regain possession, can they break to score in 2 mini goals.

- Cones indicate the 5 corridors of the pitch (theortically). Can defending team occupy 4 out of the 5 corridors. Helps with spacing and structure.

- All players to be restricted to their designated areas as shown.

Coaching Points

- Angles and distances

- Individual player roles within the unit; Pressing def, cover def, and balance def.

- If wide, create a C-Shape, if central, create a dog leg shape.

- Effective and informative information; select a 'captain' to organise the unit.

- Tempo; defensive movement and adjustment needs to be match speed (will require regular breaks in play for rest due to physical nature of drill)

- Depth of balancing defender compared to pressing defender. Allows time for recovery and a greater chance of intercept.

- Compact and narrow, "fill the gaps" to block out the attacking team.

- Always needs pressure on the ball

- Force/show attackers down a certain route; could lead to a defensive trap or outwide out of touch

- Adjust when ball is in transit

Progression(s)

- Introduce offside line set by cone/flag or defending team

- Attackers can now use a lofted pass to their ST

- No pass limit for attackers before passing forwards to ST

- Increase playing area size

- If ball is successfully played into attacking ST, 1 defender can recover to stop ST from scoring.

Regression(s)

- Increase number of minimum passes the attackers have to make before playing forward into ST

- Reduce playing area size

SSG (25 mins)

Organisation

- Half 11-a-side pitch with a 15m area to create attacking team unopposed oppourtunity to play out from their GK

- 16 players

- 8v8

- Defenders (blue) setup in a 1-4-3-1 formation

- Attackers (red) setup in a 1-2-4-2 formation

- Ball starts with Blue GK, poor distrubtion gives Red GK possession. Play out to one of Red CB. Work ball forward, try to score.

- Blue (defending team) defend the ball and prevent Reds scoring. If regain possession, 15s to counter and score in opposite goal.

- Blue cannot intercept/tackle in Red's unopposed area.

Coaching Points

- Delay and Dictate where the attackers play to

- Maintain Zonal defending structure

- Blue midfield 3 to provide screen and cover

- Blue ST cutting off ball from Red def to mid

- Be in control

- Triggers of press; poor touch, backwards pass, poor pass.

- Consider pitch geography and the 5 corridors of pitch

- Counter attack effectively when regain possession

- Angles and distances

- Individual player roles within the unit; Pressing def, cover def, and balance def.

- If wide, create a C-Shape, if central, create a dog leg shape.

- Effective and informative information; select a 'captain' to organise the unit.

- Always needs pressure on the ball

- Force/show attackers down a certain route; could lead to a defensive trap or outwide out of touch

- Adjust when ball is in transit

Progression(s)

- Introduce offside line (set by flag/cone or defending team)

- Introduce competition/point system; goal for red = 1 point, goal for blue = 2 points. If blue can delay reds from shooting for set period of time 30-45s = 1 point.

Regression(s)

- Remove unopposed area; Blue ST can press Red CB

- Pass limit on Reds before Shooting
