Description

Session Objective: Learning how to advance the ball forward from a goal kick by breaking the opponent's first line to advance the attack with our defensive line and midfielders

Game Moment: In Possession

Physical Load: Threshold (75%)

Identified Game Situation:

Current Behavior: Our GK or center backs play a long pass attempting to break the opponent's first line of defense of strikers and wingers, but losing the ball in the midfield as the pass is an aerial 50/50 ball.

Desired Behavior (5 W's):

What: Teaching our center backs how to break the first line of the opponent's defense by playing wide or through to the center defensive midfielder. After that, learning how to play the highest line where our midfielders advance forward with support from the center striker centrally allowing wide play to the wingers. This could be direct to break the second line of the opponent's defense or switch of play recognizing an overload on the weak side of the opponent's defense.

Who: Primary - 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 2, 3

Where: At the goal kick on our defensive third

When: When our center back or goalie initiates play off the goal kick

Why: We want to teach our players the importance of keeping possession while building from our defensive third into our attacking area of the middle third. We believe its critical to not lose possession on a high risk aerial pass that requires 1v1 win of play central in our middle third where losing the ball results in the opponent quickly countering towards our goal with their forwards and wingers.

What Ifs:

* Goalie plays ball to center back

* Center back plays ball to outer back

* Center back or goalie plays to center midfielders

Coaching Points:

* Drive with the ball to exploit space

 * Recognize and exploit space.

 * Accelerate play through dribble: individually progress the ball into space with change of tempo.

 * Attract opponent (draw attention).

* Engage opponent: create 1v1 or 2v1

 * Dribble and look for 1v1 or 2v1 :

  - Engage to isolate opponent:

  - Eliminate through dribble: take opponent on in 1v1

  - Eliminate through pass or give and go

 * Move or hold the ball to attract opponent:

  - Move the opponent, invite pressure to create space for teammate.

* Find a free player between or behind the lines

 * Pass quickly, accurately and with appropriate pace to a free player.

 * Skip a line: recognize opportunity & take risk: look furthest first, look nearest second.

 * Pass dictates the action: pass with intent

* Switch play: pass the ball to opponent's weak zone

 * Draw opponent to one side and find space on the opposite side:

  - Direct change of point: long pass

  - Indirect change of point: short pass

Warm-up (15 mins)

Organization:

  • Non game form
  • 20 by 20 yard space
  • Setup various cones as gates as shown

Activity Objective:

  • Technical - teaching players the importance of weighed passes and quality of pass (accuracy, technique) when playing in between gates

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 4 minutes 30 seconds
  • Rest duration - 30 seconds
  • Sets - 2
  • Players are playing the pass in between cones using inside foot pass and receive techniques
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - Player on the ball is frozen, player off the ball can move to go to the next gate
  • Rotations/Substitutions - When set is completed, make coaching points as observed and do again.

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Technical - teaching players quality of pass and why.
  • When - Natural Stoppage
  • How - Direct Feedback/Explicit Guidance - focus on technique first. Ask players to keep ball on the ground at all times. Lock ankle, drive ball on the ground. Ensure weighted pass in between the red cones

Function (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 50 by 55 yard space (1/2 field)
  • Two mini goals on each end
  • Focus team - 7 attackers in blue
  • Opponent team - 4 defenders in red

Activity Objective:

  • To move forward quickly in breaking defender's first line of pressure when building from a goal kick

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 2 minutes
  • Rest duration - 30 seconds
  • Sets - 10
  • 7+GKv4 game. Focus team starts with the ball with the goalie to start the set. Focus team can score at either mini goal at dribble into endzone. If opponent wins ball score at full sided goal.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - All side outs are resets of play back to the goalie to start a new interval.
  • Rotations/Substitutions - When interval is completed, substitute in new opponent

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Educating players how width and depth helps disorient the opponent to allow build-up play to occur and break the lines
  • When - Planned Stoppage - after the 3rd set, start of 4th set.
  • How - Direct Feedback/Explicit Guidance - demand the players to play quickly and progress forward. Demand the defenders play with high intensity to pressure the ball. Ensure the defenders know to take away the middle passing lane on the first pass to force the play to start wide.
  • How - Questions/Guided Discovery - 1) when the ball is played wide, which player should help us triangulate to progress the ball forward (midfielder)? 2) when the midfielder checks into the attacking area outside the safety zone, what should be the player's first action (scan first, then enter playing area, then make the next pass on the first or second touch)? 3) When pressure arrives to the ball at an angle to take away the pass from the sideline, what can the 2nd attacker do to help the player on the ball with pressure (1st attacker) (demo switch of play here where the 2nd attacker is played to and then plays wide on the other side).

Phase (20 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 50 by 55 yard space (1/2 field)
  • One large goal on one end
  • Two mini goals on the other end about 20 yards apart
  • Focus team -8 attackers in blue + GK
  • Opponent team - 6 defenders in red

Activity Objective:

  • To move forward in breaking defender's first and second line of pressure by making quick passes with quick movement to drive the ball forward with speed.

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 4 minutes
  • Rest duration - 1 minute
  • Sets - 4
  • 6v8+GK game. Focus team starts with the ball from the GK as a goal kick and is progressing the possession forward to score at either mini goal. Opponent can intercept to go to goal to score.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - All side outs are resets of play. Offsides rule in effect.

  • Rotations/Substitutions - N/A

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Defensive line and midfielders now work together to progress quickly by exploiting space forward to build the attack from our defensive third into the middle third
  • When - Introduction - use the introduction to explain to the players expectations and do a walk through using the 1st set. Be concise in coaching action and demand of player's movement.
  • How - Demo/Model. We want the coach to demo the following options:
    • 1) When we play the wide to the outer back from the center back. In this scenario, ask the opponent's winger to pressure the outer back. We want to see the outer back have one of two decisions - take on 1v1 to exploit space forward behind the opponent's winger OR give and go with the 6/8 to move forward. Technique - focus on the outer back's first touch to help dictate the decision making process. If the first touch is towards the center back, then the give-and-go option is ON for the outer back. If the touch is wide and outside, then explode of that touch to dribble forward
    • 2) When we play the ball up the middle with our center back playing to either 6/8. First, have the opponent's center striker pressure the center back to witness the first decision point. In this case, the center back can play a one-touch pass to the other center back and then play forward to either the 6/8. Key here is we want to play FORWARD, so teach the 6/8 to scan, open up on back foot receive to turn and play quickly if that's on with space in front. Next, have the opponent's 10 pressure either the 6/8 to receive the ball. This will now force the 6/8 receiving the ball to not be able to turn to go forward. Again, we want to play forward. The player cue here seeing the opponent's 10 pressing our 6/8 is tthe outer back. Ask the outer back to make a run forward on the cue of the 6/8 receiving the ball, allow the 6/8 to pass the ball to the outer back to exploit space forward
    • 3) SEE DIAGRAM. Lastly, how do we switch the play if we see a weak overload on the other side. Ask the center back to play the ball to our outer back with the opponent 9 and 11 sliding to play containment, not pressure. We also want the opponent's 10 to also slide and be behind the forward and winger to provide balance. This is now a 3v3 scenario where we have our center back, outer back, and 6/8 against the opponent's forward, winger, and 10. In this case, ask the other center back to slide into the space where the first center back originally was to allow the switch of play. Recognizing we don't have a numerical advantage, ask the center back to move up, allowing the other center back to receive the ball as the opponent's striker will move. Switch of play occurs where now the other center back plays to our 6/8 and the other outer back against the opponent's winger, creating 2v1 to go forward.
