Counter attacking
- This practice sees three players follow a set working pattern that involves a diagonal pass, a back-foot reception, a finish and a 1v1 battle to goal.
- The ball starts with Player A, who plays a diagonal pass to Player B – who receives the ball having moved away from the mannequin.
- Player B should take the ball on their back foot, breaking the line of the mannequin with their first touch. On doing so, their aim is to finish in the mini-goal
following their second or third touch.
- As the ball leaves Player A’s foot from the initial pass, Player C leaves their position at the side of the mini□goal to attempt to score in the mini-goal positioned
opposite.
- As soon as Player B has attempted their finish, they must turn immediately to try to prevent Player C from scoring. This represents an aggressive recovery run.
- As each repetition ends, Player A and Player B swap roles while Player C continues to play the role of 1v1 attacker. Player C is encouraged to recover back to their initial position at a reasonable pace.
- The start position of the practice alternates each working block between the left and right-hand side.
• The final working set sees the start position vary at the beginning of each repetition.
Player B's actions represent receiving the ball during a counter attack and playing a well driven pass forward and doing so quickly. Player C's actions represent Running with the ball at speed during a counter attack.

Counter attacking - Forward Pass
Forward play warm up
- Players dribble and pass with their partner inside of the square. On coach's "GO", the player without the ball makes a fast forward run while their team mate plays a long pass along the ground for their teammate to run onto.
- Really set the tone in this drill and ensure players on the ball take minimal dribbles and can play well driven and accurate passes to their teammate who's making the forward run.
- Coach the body shape of the player running ahead and demand intensity.
-Progression - The other square is offside so they cannot receive the ball inside this square
