Description

Handball games are a great way to introduce the idea of passing, moving, supporting and sharing. It's also a great fun warm-up for Week 8 (Handball Fun).

The next two games (Quick Counter) and (Don't Miss the Target) both revolve around scoring and being accurate with your shooting and your decision making in front of goal and so are a great way to finish and motivate your players to come back next week.

Handball Fun

Organisation: The game shown is 3v3 and this is a nice format to use to begin to introduce the notion of “intercepting” with Foundation Phase players.  Area size is 12x12m.

The game is handball and each team must try to keep possession and penetrate to the end line or scoring zone to score a point.

Options 1: Allow players to move 3 or 4 steps or not when holding the ball

Option 2: Allow throws/passes over head height or not

Option 3: Specify the type of pass eg. Chest pass only (a chest pass means that players MUST open up a passing line)

Each variation will bring different returns so think about what you are going after and what your young players need.

Quick Counter

Organisation: The game is set up as shown in an area 15x10m. Each team of two has a GK.

How to Play:

The game starts with the GK of the Yellow team. The ball is rolled out and the 2v1 trying to score begins (2 Yellow v 1 White player). The waiting White player at the side of the goal has a ball ready to come on.

If the Yellow team score in the 2v1 then their GK restarts the game by rolling another ball to them to attack again. If the '2' keep scoring against the '1' then they continue to attack. BUT, if they shoot and miss or shoot and the GK saves the ball, then the waiting White player immediately enters the game dribbling their ball. The Yellow team must react as the White team now try to score. If they do - then they restart the game as the team with 2v1 and a Yellow player now waits at the side of the goal ready to enter the pitch.

If the ball goes out on the sidelines normal pass in or dribble in applies.

Option 1: This game is 2v1 with a waiting player. The game can be 3v2 with a waiting player, or any other overload of with one player waiting.

Option 2: Change the size of the area. Smaller is more challenging whilst a bigger area may more thinking time.

Option 3: If the GK of the '1' saves the ball then the GK launches the counter attack with a throw and the waiting player enters the area WITHOUT a ball.

Option 4: Have the waiting player entering the pitch from different positions around the area.

Don't Miss The Target

Organisation: The game is set up as shown. Two teams of 3v3 plus GK's. The area is 30x15m but adjust it to suit the age and ability of your players.

How to Play:

The game starts off 3v1 (plus GK's) and the object for the White team is to keep on scoring. If they do then the game restarts from their GK and they attack again.

If the one Yellow player gains possession they can try to score against the White team of three players (this is a great game if your team contains a good dribbler as they will have a real challenge 1v3)

If the ball goes out of play the Yellow players ALWAYS gets the restart to dribble the ball back into play again (again a great game for developing individual dribbling skills).

If the White team shoot and the GK saves then the ball is rolled out to the one Yellow player again.

Where the game gets interesting.

If the White team shoot and miss then this immediately releases one of the Yellow players on the halfway line. They enter the pitch trying to score. If successful, they stay on and make the game 3v2 (plus GK's) but if they miss or the GK saves the ball they go back to the halfway line with their ball and wait for the White team to shoot and miss again.

If they have scored and the game becomes 3v2 and the White team shoot and miss again then the remaining Yellow player enters the game and if they score they then make the game 3v3 and this is played for a set time before the game is reset in favour of the Yellow team having the 3v1 advantage to start with.

Option 1: Change the pitch size and goal size (either larger or smaller)

Option 2: Have the players entering the pitch from different places (nearer or further from the goal)

Option 3: Start the game with more players on each side
