FUNctional Activity: The Battle (10 mins)

Session Organization: Suggested Equipment: 20 cones, 12 balls, 2 sets of bibs, 4 portable goals or 8 portable poles. Grid Size: 20m x 20m (as a guide) - create a small square within the middle of the grid.

Explanation: Divide players into two even teams, one team inside the small square and the rest around the outside of the main grid. Each player in the middle square (yellow) has a ball, when coach calls "go" they will each try to get to the outside of the main grid, while the outside team (white) will aim to stop them in a series of 1v1 duels.

Scoring System: 1 point for a yellow player reaching the outside line. 2 points for white player if they win the ball and get into the small inner square. Instruct players to keep their own score throughout.

Progression: Swap role of teams after 5 attempts (as a guide). Look to create different matchups between your players.

Evaluation: Encourage players to engage in 1v1 duels.

Encourage players to win the ball back swiftly when they lose it.

Praise creative attempts to beat a defender.

Recognition Phase: Game (10 mins)

Session Organization: Grid Size - create two 15m x 20m games (as a guide) - create penalty areas using cones/flat markers.

Explanation: Divide squad into 4 equal teams, e.g. two games of 3v3 for a squad of 12 (as shown).

Regular game rules for the first 5 minutes, maximise playing time by starting/restarting with GKs (balls nearby). Aim to give all players an opportunity at playing GK.

Scoring System: Regular rules - first 5 minutes (1 goal = 1 point). After 5 minutes, reward 3 points for a goal scored after beating an opponent in 1v1 duel. Creating the "1v1" incentive.

Progression: Rotate teams/roles and give everyone a chance in the GK role.

Evaluation: Key Coaching Points as previously stated:

Encourage players to engage in 1v1 duels.

Encourage players to win the ball back swiftly when they lose it.

Praise creative attempts to beat a defender.

Intervention: Skill Breakdown (Attacking) (5 mins)

Session Organization: Create 15m x 7m grids (guide).

Explanation: Position 4 players per grid in two teams, with one player from each team on opposing ends (as shown). Game starts when yellow player passes to opposite yellow teammate, as pass is played the white defender from the side the ball is played can enter to defend in a 1v1 duel.

Scoring System: Attacker: 2 points for dribbling the ball over the defender's starting line. Defender: 1 point for winning the ball and dribbling over the attacker's starting line.

Progression: Swap roles for attackers and defenders regularly.

Evaluation - Key Coaching Questions:

Pre-Action: Can you keep the ball close to your feet? Can you keep your head up to see your opponent?

Action: Are you able to use body feints, change speed & direction to beat your opponent?

Post-Action: Can you accelerate past the defender?

Key Coaching Words: Glue (ball close to feet), Scan (head up looking at opponent), Positive (creative instinct to beat defender).

Progression: Swapping roles of attackers/defenders regularly.

Action: Can you win the ball back when a heavy touch is taken?

Post-Action: Are you able to counter-attack with speed?

Key Coaching Words: Surfboard/Skateboard (Standing Side-On to block line to goal), Challenge (when a heavy touch is taken), Fast-break (counter-attack with speed), as shown in diagram from coach when white team defender has won the ball.

Application: Mini Games (20 mins)

Session Organization: Create 15m x 20m grid with goals on each end (size approx. guide).

Explanation: Split players into 2 equal teams and 2 GKs. Position teammates on opposite diagonal corners as shown. Play starts when GK passes to their teammate on same end, a defender enters from opposite end to engage in a 1v1 duel. In this example, player from the white team tries to score past the GK at the far end and yellow defender attempts to win the ball and score at the end that their opponent has come from. Once this sequence is finished, the next ball/sequence comes from the GK at the opposite end.

Scoring System: 1 point for a regular goal and 1 point to GK for a save. 2 points for a goal scored after beating a defender in a 1v1 duel. 3 points for a defender who wins the ball and scores at the opposite goal.

Progression: 2 balls (Chaos Game). 2v1 or 2v2 duels. Attackers/defenders to start from different angles/distances. Swap roles for attackers/defenders.

Evaluation: As before with the Coaching Questions and Key Words (Attackers/Defenders) from the Skill Breakdowns.

Session Organization: Grid Size: Either two smaller games (15m x 20m for 3v3) or a larger game (approx 30m x 40m for 6v6). Penalty areas marked out by cones/flate markers.

Explanation: Option A - Divide squad into equal teams into either two 3v3 games (Recognition Game) OR

Option B - a larger 6v6 game (as shown). Playing normal football rules, all goals worth 1 point. Maximise game time by starting/restarting with balls next to either GK.

Progression: Rotate players into different positions to gauge versatility and give them practice in different situations.

Evaluation - Key Coaching Words:

Attackers: Glue, Scan, Positive.

Defenders: Surfboard/Skateboard, Challenge, Fast-break.
