Warm Up (10 mins)

RECAP Pressure / Cover. 10yd x 24yd areas; Groups of 8-players as shown above.

i) Play 3 v 1 in one area. Complete 3-passes to allow you to play forward to other group.

ii) Once ball goes to new group, defenders change roles.

iii) Encourage covering defender (2nd) to communicate with pressure defender (1st) and move accordingly to cover ball, man and space. Every minute, switch defenders.

Coaching Points

1) Pressure / Cover: Are players executing Pressure & Cover effectively? Are they communicating and working together?

2) Effort/Energy: Are defenders willing to work hard to regain possession? Are they applying 'Press - Don't - Dive"?

3) Tackling: When a tackle is being made, is the technique good? Do they choose the right type of tackle? Do they keep possession?

Activity One (15 mins)

2 x 20yd x 30yd areas; Teams of 3-Players set up as shown above with 2 x 6-goal game (middle goals count for both games);

P,C,B Position 1: When wide attacker has the ball,

i) 1st defender (nearest the ball) curves he's run and applies pressure.

ii) 2nd defender moves up and across to offer cover.

iii) 3rd defender moves up and across to offer BALANCE.

P,C,B Position 2: When central attacker has the ball

i) 1st defender (nearest the ball) applies pressure whilst screening a forward pass / shot.

ii) 2nd defender tucks in to offer cover.

iii) 3rd defender tucks in the other side of pressure and offers BALANCE to the defensive shape.

Every minute swap out one team, to give everybody 2-3 reps as defending/attacking teams.

ADV, Play 3v3 to goals. Every 1-min, switch opponents. After two round of games, winner stays on. Apply a penalty / incentive to losing team.

 Coaching Points

1) Pressure / Cover / Balance: Are players executing Pressure / Cover / Balance correctly? Are they communicating and working together?

2) Anticipation Are defensive players dictating where the ball is passed?Can they anticipate a pass and arrive at the same time as the ball? Better still, could they intercept the pass and counter attack?

3) Tackling: When a tackle is being made, is the technique good? Do they choose the right type of tackle? Do they keep possession?

Activity Two (15 mins)

In a 30yd x 40yd areas; Teams of 4-Players set up as shown with 6-goals;

Using the same technique as teaching balance, demonstrate the movement of the 4-defenders in tandem in relation to the ball. DEPTH Is the 4th defender that covers the space in behind OR the space opposite the ball.

Play 4v4 to goals. Every 1-min, switch opponents. After two round of games, winner stays on. Apply a penalty (10-push ups) to losing team

Coaching Points

1) P, C, B, D: Are the defending team playing with good defensive shape? Are they communicating? Are they moving as one?

2) Space: Does defending team keep the ball in front of them? Do they squeeze the space away from attacking team forcing them closer to their goals? Are they vulnerable to a split pass or through ball?

3) Counter Attack: If defensive shape is good and wins the ball, how quickly do they counter attack? Is transition one player ore all of them?

Final Game (20 mins)

40d x 30yd area; Play 5 v 5 indoor futsal to small goals. Winner stays on.

Formation Emphasis: Pressure, Cover, Balance & Depth in defense

Team Points:

- Press - Don't - Dive

- Don't get 'Bullied' by physical opponents OR ball manipulation

- Stay "Patient - Focused - Determined" to win back possession
