5v4 Overload Conditioned Game - Animation (20 mins)

Instructions:

  • 3 x 1v1 channels set up 10yds in front of goal (channels 12x8yds depending on age of players). Additional horizontal channel set up

  • perpendicular to the 1v1 channels approx 8x24yds. 2v1 in attacking favour in this channel creating a 5v4 all in.

  • Play begins by coach playing into attackers in 2v1 channel. Play progresses by attackers trying to pass the ball to a team-mate in a 1v1 channel as they work towards a shot at goal. An additional attacker can join to create a 2v1. Defenders must stay in their zone.

Progressions:

  • Additional defender can support to create a 2v2.

  • Additional attacker from deep can support to create a 3v2.

  • Attackers and Defenders can go freely in previous 1v1 channels. Additional attacker from deep zone can support to create 4v3.

Attacking Coaching Points:

  • Use all the space available to attackers, create width, depth and length but do not let attacker on the ball become isolated without a passing option.

  • Check away before receiving at all times.

  • If unable to receive in 1v1 channel then stay away from the play or move into a space that will drag a defender out of position.

  • Avoid occupying same space as team-mate.

  • Play quickly once into the final zones.

Defending Coaching Points:

  • Work to isolate defenders into 2v2s or better. Cut off their passing angles by angling pressing and body to make a pass to a supporting team-mate difficult.

  • Do not get split by a pass. Defenders in 1v1 channels should approach the press in such a way that stops the attacker playing a supporting pass ‘inwards’ to team-mate. Force attackers out.
