Technical Introduction- Ball Mastery15 mins

Technical Introduction:

Set-up: Put up gates with two different color cones and central box. Each player has a ball and is working by themselves.

Activity: Within a time frame (30 seconds/adjust as needed) players work to get through the gates as quickly as possible. Once you travel through one gate, you must find a different one for it to count as a point.

Different Progressions/Regressions:

1. Carry the ball and get through gates as quickly as possible (U7)

2. Yellow cones worth 2 points/central area worth 2 points.

3. Must get through the center area after each gate to unlock next gate.

4. Use different surfaces of the feet/use R/L/both, etc.

Coaching Points:

- Head up as we dribble

- Accelerate after change of direction

-Little touches vs. bigger touches. When do we use different touches? Little for control/bigger for speed

-Allow them to explore the field with limited restrictions/can introduce different types of turns/touches for more experienced groups.

Have kids keep track of points/winner wins the round. (make competitive)

Relay Races- Emphasis on Fun

Setup- Shown above, place cones 1-2 yards away from each other.

-Pair up (do not do teams of 3/limit lines) If you have someone by themselves, have them go twice.

Progressions-

Dribble through cones and get around far cone. Then dribble back and perform takeover with teammate. Once both players get back sit down quickly. Determine winning team and give points. Make it fun/give points for random positives if one team is struggling.

Regressions: do an activity without the ball, may allow some players to have more success.

Different patterns/challenges to keep it engaging.

Coaching Points:

- Head up as we dribble

- Accelerate after change of direction

-Little touches vs. bigger touches. When do we use different touches? Little for control/bigger for speed

-Allow them to explore the field with limited restrictions/can introduce different types of turns/touches for more experienced groups.

Coaching Points:
  • Ensure proper rules of the game are being followed!!!!
  • Allow players time to get used to the activity before stepping in.
  • Shape; movement of the ball is essential, spread out to create gaps to pass and dribble/time on the ball.
  • find coachable moments (Topic Driven)
  • Use Q and A, guided discovery to make coaching points.
  • Refrain from stopping the game to make coaching points. Coach in natural stoppages/Flow of the game.
