Direction Change Warm-Up

Each player dribbles around the field with small touches.  On every call, change direction quickly.  Try not to do it by dribbling in a curve.  Try to do a handling move (half bell, outside touch, etc.)

Machine Gun Press (20 mins)

Objectives:

  • Kick-and-Move
  • Reinforcing passing in offense

Equipment Needed:

  • pinnies
  • 5-6 players: 2 balls
  • 7-8 players: 3 balls
  • 9-10 players: 4 balls

If there are an even number of players, play one as keeper.  Player at A runs to B and passes the ball up to teammate, then runs to C and passes ball up to teammate, then runs to third ball and dribbles to cone D.  Player A should not stop running until they get to position D.

Once a player receives ball B, the two players on the left try to score against one defender (2v1).  When that play is exhausted, player with ball C joins, along with an additional defender (3v2).  When that's done, Player A (at cone D) joins, along with an add'l defender (4v3).

Questions and observations:

  • When a new defender takes the field, where should they focus their attention?
  • When a new striker starts play, what should they do?  How do they decide whether to dribble or pass?
  • When a ball goes out of play, what do we do next? Where do we shift our focus?

Goal Kick Center Clumping (20 mins)

Goal Kick Center Clumping

Objectives:

  • move the ball from a Goal Kick upfield past the half line quickly and effectively
  • MF awareness of how & when to help strikers or defense
  • GK work on putting the ball into play
  • use MF clumping to build open spaces
  • transitioning from O to D in the same play
Equipment
  • 1 ball
  • 1 cone
Exercise:
  • Set-Up: Players set up as indicated, with wide D and narrow MF and S.  Coaches play the role of opposing players, clustered around the MF.
  • A: GK plays the ball to either defender (R in this example).  GK sends the ball just upfield of the D. R Coach moves in to attack.
  • B: R MF & S move to the sideline to play the ball upfield.  L MF moves downfield to help D if they need it.  L S moves upfield to help score.
  • C: passing: R D to R MF to R S to L S.  L S dribbles to cone and shoots.
  • Reset and repeat, rotating players and switching sides where the GK serves.

Questions:
  • What do we do if the D can't get the ball past the opposing team? That's why the extra MF is there to help in defense.

Variations:

  • Once the L S has the ball, the S become D, the D become S, the GK joins the Coaches team, and the red players work together to pass the ball back up the field to try to score on the keeper.  Use double goal if possible to give GK a realistic experience
