Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): Playing out the Back SSG

POTB SSG (15 mins)

Setup:

10 to 12 players

4 v 4 in centre playing area with 1 or 2 CBs in each end zone, depending on number of players available

Area width of an indoor penalty box and depth about 30 yards depending on skill of players

Cones to mark out playing area

Pinnies to diferentiate teams

Instructions:

Play starts out the back from the CB into the playing area and the team in possession has to score a point by getting the ball to a CB in the other end zone. If possession is lost, the team in possession can score in any end. The team that scores will then attack the other end zone. The CB cannot be pressured in the end zone. CBs can pass to one another to create a passing opportunity into the active playing area. The team in possession can play back to the CB if there are no options and to recirculate the ball into play.

Switch teams so that each team plays the CB role for an equal amount of time.

Coaching Points:

Quick passing to get the defending team out of shape.

CBs need to support on the ends to receive goal scoring pass or pass back.

Formation of attacking team is important. Triangles and diamonds.

Explain role of CM and advanced CM.

Body stance and first touch into space.
