Specific Small Sided Game Practice
Pitch Organisation / Geography
Pitch size:
- 30 yards x 40 yards, c/w halfway line.
- Two sides of 7 play against each other in a 1-2-3-1 formation.
- To start 5 yellows play against 4 reds, with a 2vs 1 (2 reds vs 1 yellow) in the opposite section of the pitch.
Focus Points
- Play starts with the yellow goalkeeper.
- Yellows have to make 4 passes before they can look to transfer the ball into their attacking half of the pitch.
- When they transfer they have to play into the striker.
- Once the striker controls the ball, 3 yellows can carry out an attacking transition. 3 reds can make a defensive transition.
- If the reds win the ball in the yellow half they can go straight for goal and yellows have to make an aggressive press to win the ball back.
In possession
- Play forward
- Use width
- Players off the ball to consider positioning to create overloads
Out of Possession
- Stay Narrow and Com pact

Rondo Transition (Phase 1)
Multi-Directional Rondo
- Each grid will be allocated roughly 4 players based on the
overall number of players we have available for the session.
- Three defenders will then start in a neutral position, ready to win the
ball back from a grid of their choice.
- On my call, the defenders will win back a ball from a grid of
their choice (all three defenders can either go to separate grids,
or partner up with another defender on a grid).
- Once the defender wins the ball back, the player who
lost possession must sprint to another grid and try and retrieve the
ball from that grid.
- This process will then be repeated for 4 X 3 minute blocks with a1
minute break in between.
Organisation / Area Size
- 3 X 4X4 Grids spread between the 18 yard line and half-way line.
- Roughly 4 players per grid with 3 defenders start on in a neutral area.
- Once a defender wins possession, the player who lost possession must sprint to another grid.
Focus Points
1. Players are to always check shoulder when receiving the ball, to be aware of any defender sprinting into the confined space of the grid.2. If two defenders work together to win the ball back in the same grid (as this is allowed), then focus on playing the ball throughand around them. If it is just the one defender, then focus on playing around him.
Challenges
1. 3 touch limit.
2. Aim to get 6 passes together as a minimum before potentially losing possession when a defender is present.
