Description

Overview:

Topic: Dribbling and first touch in tight spaces

Age: U9

Ability: Basic/Cognitive

Number of players: 8

Learning Objectives:

  • Close control movement in confined spaces
  • Focus on first touch to start the dribble
  • Importance on emphasising movements

Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

Traditional Practice Layout (Technique, Skill, SSG) for U9 level players with basic/cognitive ability of playing football.

Transitions mentioned in session descriptions

Technical Coaching Style:

Autocratic: Will be used in the technical session to give players certain instructions to follow and give little player freedom. This is classed as a more dictatorial way of coaching, described as 'coach-led' (Brooks, 2022)

Skill Coaching Style:

Democratic: Will be used in the skill session to give players more creativity in their decision making, particularly against an opposition. This allows players to find solutions to their own problems and 'explore through play' (Brooks, 2022)

SSG Coaching Style:

Laissez-Faire: Will be used in the SSG. This is more of a hands off approach which allows players freedom in their decisions and movements. Coaches are able to intervene at any moment if the opportunity arises. (Chapman, 2015)

Technique (15 mins)

Equipment: Cones, Balls, Flats, Whistle, Stopwatch

Time: 15 mins

Players: 8

Work:Rest ratio: (4:1)

Area size: 30x25m

Description: Dribbling and First Touch in Tight Spaces:

2 players will be behind each flat marker

The players that are starting with the ball will dribble through the cones and lay the ball off to the next player and join the back of the opposite line

To progress, players on one side will dribble through the cones and pass to the opposite player afterwards. During that, they will call a direction (left or right)

Players will then take their first touch as close to the yellow cone as possible and drive to the end of the opposite line. The process is then repeated.

Coaching Points:

  • Inside and outside of the foot when dribbling
  • Use both feet as much as possible
  • Head up when dribbling
  • First touch out in front of you (as if you are chasing the ball)
  • Close control

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

  • First touch focus out to yellow cones (explained in description)
  • Competition to see what side completes the most dribbles
  • Adjust area size accordingly
  • Adjust space between the cones when dribbling accordingly

Planned Interventions:

Team Meeting: At the beginning of the session to explain the practice

Walkthrough: Players will walk through the practice with a demonstration for visual purposes before playing live

Freeze: Pause the practice when there are common mistakes

Bullseye: Pull an individual to the side to give feedback on session performance

Concurrent: Delivering positive and critical feedback throughout the entire session as it goes on

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Weak foot only
  • Time limit to complete the drill (4 secs)
  • Add stepovers/skill moves wherever suitable
Transition from Technique to Skill:
  • 1 minute drinks break

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Repetition of dribbling and first touch techniques
Technical Tactical
Using mechanics and coaching points in opposed setting
Technical Physical
Work:Rest ratio: (4:1). Emphasis on explosive movement in small area size.
Technical Psychological
Praise and critique. Risk and reward. Competition.
Technical Social

Skill (15 mins)

Equipment: Cones, Balls, Flats, Whistle, Stopwatch

Time: 15 mins

Players: 8

Work:Rest ratio: (4:1)

Area size: 30x25m

Description: Dribbling and First Touch in Tight Spaces:

Following on from the progression of the technique drill, players from one side will dribble through the cones and pass the ball to the opposite player.

Players will not say a direction. This time, the player receiving the ball can make the decision on which direction they will go. This is because the player who has passed the ball will be able to press the player in order for them to lose possession of the ball.

Coaching Points:

  • Inside and outside of the foot when dribbling
  • Use both feet as much as possible
  • Head up when dribbling
  • First touch out in front of you (as if you are chasing the ball)
  • Close control
  • Body between ball and man
  • Emphasise movements
  • Everything done at match speed otherwise it will not work

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

  • Player passing can call a direction
  • Call opposites
  • Competition

Planned Interventions:

Team Meeting: At the beginning of the session to explain the practice

Walkthrough: Players will walk through the practice with a demonstration for visual purposes before playing live

Freeze: Pause the practice when there are common mistakes

Bullseye: Pull an individual to the side to give feedback on session performance

Concurrent: Delivering positive and critical feedback throughout the entire session as it goes on

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Weak foot dribbling only
  • Time limit on drill completion
  • Add skills whenever possible

Transition from Skill to SSG:

  • Flats and red cones placed on side lines neatly
  • Yellow cones nearest to the edge of pitch to be pushed to the edge of pitch. Other yellows join the flats and red cones.
  • 1 minute drinks break

SSG (20 mins)

Equipment: Cones, Balls, Bibs, Whistle, Stopwatch

Time: 20 mins

Players: 8

Work:Rest ratio: (4:1)

Area size: 30x25m

Description: Dribbling and First Touch in Tight Spaces:

4v4 SSG. Main aim is to use coaching points and techniques learnt from earlier in game situations.

Area size can be flexible in order to challenge players in this scenario.

Defending team will attempt to make the pitch as small as possible (crunch the pitch)

The goal is to dribble through the endzone. There are 3 gates, the 2 gates on the outside and the gate in the middle.

Coaching Points:

  • All surfaces of the foot when dribbling
  • Use both feet as much as possible
  • Head up when dribbling
  • First touch out in front of you (as if you are chasing the ball)
  • Close control
  • Body between ball and man
  • Emphasise movements
  • Everything done at match speed otherwise it will not work

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

  • Outside gates are 1 point, middle gate is 2 points
  • No more than 4 passes made. If 4 passes have been made, then the player has to attempt to dribble to goal
  • After successful dribble, players have to run to their own by-line where their gates are placed in order to re-join the SSG.

Planned Interventions:

Team Meeting: At the beginning of the session to explain the practice and for team captains in this instance for strategies or formations

Freeze: Pause the practice when there are common mistakes

Bullseye: Pull an individual to the side to give feedback on session performance

Concurrent: Delivering positive and critical feedback throughout the entire session as it goes on

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Time limit (4 secs to dribble through the gate once received the ball)
  • Skill moves whenever possible
  • All players to complete a dribble through the end by the end of a time block
  • Set target for certain amount of points to aim for during a certain time block
