Freeze Tag (10 mins)

Organization:

Players spread out inside the 20 x 16 yard area.

Procedure:

The basic concept of 'tag.' Start with the facilitator and the volunteer coach being "it." Go over what gentle tagging looks like (light tap on the shoulder). Facilitator/coach attempt to tag as many other players as possible from whichever team. If a player is tagged they must freeze and stand with their legs apart and wait for another player to come crawl under their legs. IMPORTANT: Go over that every child must crawl through a players legs from behind. Give them a demo so that they understand.

Progression: Two players can be "it"; Give all players who are not "it" a soccer ball.

Emphasis: Heads up, running, and FUN!

Partner Tag (10 mins)

Organization:

1. 40x30 area set up as shown.

2. Every player with a partner.

- One player is #1 and the other is #2

Instructions:

- Players are given #1 or #2, player #1 starts as the 'leader'

- Player 1 is trying to dribble away from player #2

- Player #2 is trying to chase Player #1 and TAG their partner

- If Partner gets tagged, they just reverse rolls.

Coaching Points/Questions:

- This game is about FIELD awareness. Especially with young ones who have tunnel vision for just their ball or their partner. Encourage them to know where their partner is and where others are. For the player that is the 'leader' and is being chased encourage them to dribble away and find their own space.

- When you have space you have room for BIG touches.

- BIG touches = going faster

Regressions/Progressions:

- Place Speed Bumps (Cones): If a player hits a speed bump they have to do 5 toe taps/inside ball squishes/triangle touch/etc.

Warm Up Spidertag (15mins) (10 mins)

Activity:

The players must run away from the Spiderman/Spiderwoman (Coaches) who are

trying to tag other players by throwing the spiderweb (pinnie), when a player is tagged by the Spiderman/Spiderwoman they must pick up the pinnie and try to tag someone else with it. Play a couple rounds and add assistant or parent as another Spiderman/Spiderwoman.

Progressions:

- If group is strong enough (U6-U7) add a ball and Spiders must hit the ball with web. If they hit it, they take the ball and player that gets tagged picks up the pinnie.

Coaching points:

- Changing direction

- Finding Space

- Keeping head up (don't bump into eachother)

Chain Gang (5 mins)

Chain Gang

Minutes: 10

Players: Unlimited

Objectives: To improve mobility and agility; to improve communication

Setup: Use markers to outline a 30 yard square. Designate 2 players as "IT" and have them stand outside the area. Have all remaining free players stand within the square.

Procedure: The players who are "IT" enter the area to chase after and tag free players. Free players are allowed to move anywhere within the field area to avoid being tagged. A free player who is tagged must join hands with the player who tagged her to form a chain. As more players are tagged, the chain grows longer. Only 2 chains are permitted at any one time (the original chains may not split into smaller chains). Chains can work together to corner or trap free players. Continue until only 2 free players remain. Repeat the game with those 2 (winning) players being "IT" to begin the next round.

Scoring: The last 2 remaining free players win the game.

Progression: Free players can also have a ball at their feet. After being tagged they kick their ball outside the grid (once they are required to join a chain).

Shirt/Flag Tag

General Warm-Up (All Groups)

Objective: To develop dribbling skills

Setup: Play in a 20x20 or 30x30 grid. Each player tucks a coloured flag (bib) into the back of their shorts. At least half the flag should be hanging out. Each player has a ball.

Procedure: Players begin dribbling among themselves inside the grid. On the command of the coach the game begins. Players dribble after other players and try to steal their bibs while also keeping their bibs safe from other players. Players should keep a bib tucked into the back of their shorts while holding stolen bibs in their hand as they dribble about. Players should dribble the ball under close control at all times and are not permitted to leave their ball to chase after an opponent.

Scoring: The player who ends up with the most stolen bibs while retaining their own bib wins the game/that round.
