Defending Practice – 4v6 with T2A (Position Specific)

Theme: Defending 4v6 with T2A

Description of Practice: 4v6 practice to help improve football actions when defending centrally in opponents half

Organisation: 

Area: Width of box to half way (adjust to suit age/ability of players)

Mini goal as targets for attacking team 
Blue team - Striker, midfield 10, 8 & 6 v 4 
Yellow team - GK, 2 x centre backs (CBs), midfield 6, 8 & 10
Play starts with GK playing pass to yellow team who try to build up centrally and score into either mini goal.

Blue team try to disturb the opponents build up, win the ball and score in the big goal - Transition to attack (T2A)

Coaching Points:

• Team shape narrow and compact make it
  difficult to play through
• As Defender moves forward in possession
  Striker makes a curved run to cut off a
  pass to second Defender (Pressure)
• The rest of the team move in relation to this
  trapping the ball on one side of the pitch (Cover
  and balance)
• Communication from players behind is key
• Opened body shape when defending, see the
  ball and the opposition Player
• When ball is won, look to play forward as quickly
  as possible through quality passing (T2A)
