Defending-in possession

Focus

The focus of the drill is to keep possession of the ball while defending the line or overload. Can regress or progress the game in several ways. This is a general drill using channels to create realistic game scenarios. Rotate the teams roles so all players have the opportunity to defend the ball while in possession.

Organisation

Have 3 teams of 3v3, 3v4, 4v4 depending on number of players. This can be adapted per number of players or progression/ regressions. Use 4 goals, 2 goals on either side facing each other per the channels. In this instance there will be 3 channels all measuring the same. The blues start off as the defending players and the rotate the 2 teams roles.

Area size

Create a pitch size with 3 channels of around 24 yards x 15 yards each. This can be adapted as per players age and abilities.

Timings

Allow runs of 1 minute-3 minutes depending on abilities. Increase to take away some pressure on the defenders/ attackers as needed.

Session

Blue bibbed players to start as defending team while red are attacking. The blues must make 4 passes before they can shoot on target/ score. Red bibbed players can score/ shoot at target as many times as they want with no limitations within their channel. This aims to encourage retaining possession within a small area and keeps pressure and temp high. Rotate team roles.

Adaptations(regression and progression)

For a regression, make the channels wider to give the defenders more space to move around in. Can also add in more players or take away the number of passes , the defenders need to make before scoring. For progressions, make the channels smaller to impact the space the defenders have to make the required number of passes. Can also increase the number of passes needed. Another progression would be to take away 30 secounds each time to allow for quicker decision making and movement.

Challenges, conditions or targets

The condition is to make 4 passes between your team mates before being allowed to shoot on target, this creates the challenge of keeping the ball in your possession for as long as possible/needed for your team to make at goal attempt. This encourages team work, communication and technical abilities. The main target is to score while maintaining possession long enough to get ball to where you need it to be. This will also keep pressure up on the attacking team and allow faster decision making.

Outcome

The players should be demonstrating good use of space, maintaining possession and faster decision making in a fast paced scenario. Will encourage players confidence and abilities.

Small sided game

Focus

The aim is to use the drilll within a game and always look to keep or maintain possession of the ball. This allows the players to dominate the game. Also encourages team work, focus and communication.

Organisation

44x40 yard size pitch with 2 goals, 1 either end of the pitch. 20 minute games with 14 players, 7v7. Can be adapted depending on age and abilities.

Adaptations ( regressions and progressions)

To make a regression, take away any conditions on player movements i.e can shoot whenever they can and allow the game to flow as it would normally. For a progression, enusre each team are making 4 passes before they are allowed to make an attempt on target. Can also have 1 player from each team who must stay in the channel and can only move when a pass has been made to them and they have passed it back out of that channel.

Challenges, conditions or targets

The main challenge of the game is to keep possession long enough to get ball where it is needed for one of your players to accurately shoot on target and score. The team with most goals, win the game. Place passing conditions on certain players to ensure maximum possession and encourage the need to keep hold of the ball and work as team to win. This will encourage team communication, keep the players focus on the game itself and being aware of what is happening within the game and knowing what to do next.

Coaching practice, review and reflection
How were you able to affect individuals in the practice? I felt that i achieved this by giving individual condtions and targets aswell as giving a team target. This helped with confidence and knowing their role within the game.

What can be done to ensure you have the same, or an even better, impact next time? I will give clearer demonstrations to ensure everyone understands their role within the practice.

Whats the main thing you can do to make the session even better next time? I will make the teams start smaller 2v3, and add in players once they have demonstrated the drill properly.
