Introduction (10 mins)

Organization:

  • 8mx8m square
  • Each player with a ball

  • 1-minute games and switch (30 break)

Instructions:

  • Players pair up against an opponent.
  • Start inside square, 1 is attacker, 1 follows. Players are not to play outside grid.
  • Attacker chooses and commits to a side of the square. Ball has to be stopped on that side of the square for a point. Once the point is scored, player that followed is now attacker and chooses another side to score on (by stopping ball on that side). If 'attacker' is unable to stop ball (rolls away), then follower can potentially steal a point.
  • Follower can steal a point if attacker fails to stop ball at side (if ball rolls away, for example) and follower manages to stop it on the intended side.
  • 1-minute games, change opponent, keep score/points.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Decide and commit
  • Recognize free space

Main Activity (35 mins)

Organization:

  • 8x8m, same as prior activity
  • 1 ball per matchup (1v1)
  • All 1v1s happening inside same square

  • 1-minute games

Instructions:

  • 1v1 and goals are scored by stopping ball on side of square: player on ball scores on any side of the square (by stopping the ball on that side). Once ball is stopped, point is counted, and games resumes right away. If defender recovers ball, he/she tries to score the same way.
  • Players cannot score on the same side consecutively

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Can I use my body (shoulders, hips) to lead defender one way?
  • External focus: can I look at defender's hips and go opposite way?

Progression:

  • Now players can use entire area, not only restricted to grid.

Conditioned Play (20 mins)

Organization:

  • 8mX8m square, same as prior
  • Progress from 1v1 to 2v2, or 3v3, adjust as necessary
  • 4-minute games (1-minute break)

Instructions:

  • 4v4: teams play on entire area. Teams can score on any mini goal. If ball is received inside middle grid prior to a player scoring, then that goal will count as 3.
  • USE progression (See below)

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • If teammate leads away to one side: can I commit to another open side for a quick point?
  • in the progression: shield the ball

Progressions:

  • Once you score, your teammate has to bring the ball out of the line/zone
