Set Up: Same as in the 'Running with the Ball' session. A coach steps into the middle third to act as a defender. A second coach could also step in depending on the standard of the player.
Instructions: One player from each corner on the same side starts off together. Again they should be moving at full speed with one soccer ball. As he or she nears the defender a decision must be made as to whether to pass or keep the ball. If there is a second defender then that same decision must be made by the player with the ball again. Inside the attacking third the pair only have two touches (this could be the same player or a pass followed by a first time strike). As soon as the shot happens, the opposite end takes off as a pair and repeats the exercise. The coaches simply turn around and defend in the other direction.
Progressions: a) Add the second coach defender b) have a live defender c) have a second live defender who starts at the A1/3 line and cannot engage until the pair have passed the first defender d) have both defenders live e) turn it into a 2v2 game
Coaching Points: Attack at speed. Keep the ball under control while maintaining speed. Make the pass/keep decision based on what you see, not what you want to do. Quality of technique (pass, first touch, RWB, strike at goal).

Running with the Ball (15 mins)
Set Up: Divide the team into four even groups. GKers in both goals. The field should be about 40-60 m x 30-40 m.
Instructions: On the coach's command, one player each from opposite corners starts running with the ball at full speed. When he or she reaches the end of the attacking third, the ball is layed off for the oncoming player. Each player continues to run at full speed to the passed ball, takes a settling touch and then strikes at goal. Once the shot is off, one player from each of the opposite corners takes off at speed and does the same exercise.
Progressions: 1) Play the pass further ahead so the teammate receives the ball in a position to turn quickly and strike at goal within three touches total (two would be ideal). 2) Play an early ball to the feet of the oncoming player who lays the ball off first time as a return pass for the oncoming attacker.
Coaching Points: Run at full speed. Pace the pass so it will arrive when the player arrives. Quality first touch to set up the strike. Vary the striking technique as appropriate. Don't try to over power, allow the technique to work.
